hankg,

Now that I'm experimenting with three times a week to see if I really want to try to do a half marathon in the first half of next year I decided I also wanted to use the bike for doing my Zone 2 Heart Rate training. For that I need real calibrated power zones. has workouts for that and a calibration system for that. If you don't do a calibration then it just uses something based on your age, weight, height, etc. I thought perhaps my actual zones were slightly lower than that. Nope. They were exactly the same. Doubly good news about that is that after several months I went from piss poor cardiovascular health to average health. That also means that as I continue to incrementally improve I should be able to see that number go up as well.

drewmcmanus,

@hankg I got deep into Peloton Power Zone training for a while a couple of years ago. It’s amazing how quickly you can improve your FTP if you are really consistent in your training. I found it really gratifying. I was just thinking recently I should do that again.

hankg,

@drewmcmanus They have some old Zone 2 training videos but most of it are "Power Zone" which the one I took seemed to be more about building in the cardio zone. I want to do that too if I'm not ramping up running mileage. If I'm ramping up running mileage I want to turn the bike work into Heart Rate Zone 2 training for maximizing fat-dominated cardio zones.

drewmcmanus,

@hankg Oh, you are talking about the old Heart Rate Zone classes! They haven’t done any of those in a loooong time. I think everyone who taught them moved to Power Zone training. Power Zone Endurance classes are all programmed in Zone 2 and 3–that’s probably the best for what you are describing. And they come in durations as long as 60 or 90 minutes. I used to do a lot of those.

hankg,

@drewmcmanus Yeah I was hoping to matrix in the Power Zones to the heart rate zones. I guess I can just do that manually by adjusting down the suggested levels until the heart rate zone is in the right place. What I really need is to get a calibrated heart rate zone test. The gym I used to belong to had a machine for that with the breathing mask, heart rate monitors, etc. but I don't belong to a gym at this point so need to see if I can find a center that does it at a reasonable price. My heart rate zones were pretty off the standard formulas with some more compressed and some less compressed than the standard formula.

drewmcmanus,

@hankg Yup. A decent heart rate monitor will display your HR zones and you can just ride to that. I saw some Instagram ads recently for a bunch of “sports clinic” locations that do HR zones and DEXA scans and stuff, but don’t recall the details. I’ll keep an eye out if they come up again.
