If you are drafting figures for a scientific paper or presentation, remember that https://scidraw.io/ exists: a repository of free SVG cartoons for science.

#SciDraw is supported by the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre – @SWC_Neuro

All content on SciDraw is shared under creative commons license (CC-BY) unless stated otherwise.

@albertcardona another great resource for images licenser under various Creative Commons licenses is Wikimedia Commons. The best feature is its extensive categorization system which can be intersected, for example.

The image of the synapse caught my eye. As an example, Wikimedia has 27 images. A portion of them are repeats with translations into different languages though.

tsizzle_,

@albertcardona @SWC_Neuro theoretically, if you’re the original artist of a cartoon/schematic that appears in a pub, would it be OK to upload said cartoon/schematic to SciDraw for anyone’s use?

albertcardona,

@tsizzle_ @SWC_Neuro

Yes, even if published. Because what you are uploading is an SVG file, not whatever is present in the publication.

Also, if the publication is open access, the figures are likely CC-BY anyway.

tsizzle_,

@albertcardona @SWC_Neuro stellar - thank you! 😁

DPamplona,

@albertcardona this is so cute! ❤️❤️❤️

richardneher,

@albertcardona shouldn't standard dsDNA be right handed helix?

albertcardona,
@albertcardona@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@richardneher Good catch! There are so many examples of mirrored images. Unfortunately for DNA it matters. Might as well write to them to get it fixed before the error propagates.

G_Devailly,

@albertcardona Nice! Do you know what are its relations (if any) to https://bioicons.com/ ?

helenajambor,
@helenajambor@mastodon.social avatar

@G_Devailly @albertcardona none, BioIcons is the project from Simon Dürr, a PhD student in Lausanne. He (collaborating with me) is right now looking for possibilities to continue BioIcons, who is in charge of the Sainsbury collection? I can connect...

@helenajambor@mastodon.social avatar

@G_Devailly @albertcardona ...and thank you for this resource - I can't update my how-to-graphical abstracts article, but will amend my blog!

@albertcardona All biological images, but I guess that's a big fraction of the science going on out there.

albertcardona,
@albertcardona@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@c_dan4th True. Still useful for many.

Such a good tool, never knew, thanks

wcbdata,
@wcbdata@vis.social avatar

@albertcardona Would you mind adding alt text to these beautiful images? Thanks!

albertcardona,
@albertcardona@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@wcbdata I always add alt text to images but here it makes no sense. First, each image has many subimages; second, these are just examples from a collection.

wcbdata,
@wcbdata@vis.social avatar

@albertcardona Gotcha - Thanks for considering it, at least!

marijane,

@albertcardona I mean, there's your alt text. "A collection of example SciDraw images"

albertcardona,
@albertcardona@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@marijane Thanks, just did it.

schuemaa,

@albertcardona i did not read the instructions quite right when I uploaded my fish. Forevermore there is the tiniest of Neolamprologus pulcher swimming among the bigger fish ...

albertcardona,
@albertcardona@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@schuemaa Fortunately it's an SVG, so scaling it up is a given!

You could also upload an updated version with a much more cropped canvas?

https://scidraw.io/drawing/493

schuemaa,

@albertcardona maybe one day when I have spare time I will. In the meantime it will serve as a reminder that I should always carefully read instructions.

@albertcardona Thank goodness there's a penguin. it's not science if there aren't penguins.
