“The question is, will you want the same things once you’ve become a different animal altogether?”

Probably the best line in all of about the unexpected nature of change.

To become a fully-licensed counselor, I'm studying for a test.

The test (National Counselor Examination) is:

  • Required by state law for full licensure
  • Has secret questions
  • Unknown what score is required to pass (the company won't say)
  • Tests me on unproven philosophy that white men dreamt up in the 1800s and early 1900s and has nothing to do with my practice.

...I hate this so much.

Ugh. Down with some crud. Not covid, near as I can tell. But hella sore throat. Kinda weird because I really haven’t seen anyone except close family (partners and Dad) in the past week and a half or so, none of them are currently sick, so where did this come from?! Bletch.

My insurance company (Kaiser) says that from Jan 1-Feb 2 of this year, I'm showing as having a secondary insurance of "WorkersCompensation". I have no idea what this is or why it would be there; I'm a self-employed student and have been for the past 3 years. They can't tell me anything else about it because it seems like it's not through them

....Is this some scam or something? 🤔

jonobie,

Meanwhile, Kaiser pharmacy is telling me I have "alternate insurance" currently, so they can't bill for my medication.

...While Kaiser member benefits is telling me I'm not under any insurance beyond theirs.

I'm at a total loss as to how to fix this and am starting to feel very angry and very flustered.

I don’t think I’ve ever eaten century egg before but the soup I just made from ChineseCookingDemystified with two in it was DELICIOUS. I’m pretty sure most of the water ended up flavored with the yolk.

Ending counseling school, prepping for leading Rangers at the local burn, and dealing with my aging hoarder father apparently breeds nightmares? Last night I was working with my cohort to protect ourselves from killer drones while in an architecture of rambly rooms filled to the brim with oddball things and books, and calling an ICS incident as filthy water poured out of a room-sized washing machine into one of those rooms.

Thanks brain - what exactly are you trying to tell me?

jonobie,
@jonobie@social.coop avatar

@aires Thanks. :) I did the leading work last year too, so at least it's somewhat familiar this time through. But we're doing it with a bit less support this year (fewer full leads), so that's its own thing.

@katanova Rangering is an interesting mix. Daytime, it's usually walking around being helpful and using it as an excuse to talk to people. :) Nighttime tends to have a few more "real emergencies". And later in the week has more "slow boil" mediation issues.

Leading is a LOT of recruiting and training. Like leading other orgs, a lot of it is culture work or structural work. But then at the event you're pulled into anything "big" and cover empty shifts. And afterwards write a lot of reports. :D

jonobie,
@jonobie@social.coop avatar

@katanova Anyhoo, that makes it sound supremely boring, which I don't think it is! But it sometimes is very chill - you're basically a participant in a recognizable shirt who happens to have a radio too. And sometimes it's a lot more stressful because suddenly you need to use that radio to summon emergency services. Or, in our case - since our regional doesn't have cell coverage - to summon someone to go to a landline to call emergency services. Which can then take a while to arrive.

jonobie,
@jonobie@social.coop avatar

@katanova Yes, definitely open to chatting and bi-directional sharing. Want to drop to dm or email to work out how? I'm my handle at gmail, or dms work too.

For Arab American month, the Seattle Public Library suggested books, and I got “Track Changes” by Kashua. It’s fascinating to read an immigrant voice describing (originally in Hebrew, translated to English) their US experience. And similarly to “hear” the narrators brain chatter about what they miss about Tifa. It’s an odd book; much of it shared such that it’s hard to tell whether it’s a real convo or brain chatter. Cool device though, and so different than what I typically read.

Oh, this looks cute.

And doable.

I've tried getting into tablet weaving a few times but so far I only got as far as finding out that backstrap weaving is not for me.

I love the part of the instruction that says "spend a minute staring at the pieces"

Any other little loom hacks out there?

@FanCityKnits @weaving @fiberarts Hah, that looks amazing! I’ve seen people make warp-weighted looks out of a variety of things, including old walkers and tray tables … but mostly in Facebook groups about tablet weaving.

As I'm a week away from the end of school, a classmate just reminded our cohort about the genogram exercise we all did exactly two years ago.

Why can't I decide whether that was "a long time ago" or "just yesterday"?!

@davatron5000 @aworkinglibrary I’ve been “coached” my whole life about dropping hedge words. (In quotes because it was usually unasked for.) Suggestions to drop it from my speech, from emails, everything. Told I didn’t sound confident enough or that I needed more confidence.

Ironically as I got older and more confident, I’ve become more certain that hedge words are valuable and allow more nuance in communication! It’s critical for displaying conversational receptiveness.

As my mouth is absolutely on fire and delighted from my latest takeout from the local restaurant, I find myself wanting to learn in this style.

Anyone have English language YouTube channels or recipe books to recommend? They should assume I have access to Asian groceries, rather than trying to sub ingredients. I know of Souped Up, who seems to do a variety of styles. But no one else.

Would love suggestions or boosts!

Looking at my stats in TickTick is interesting. I'm consistent in finishing between 4-6 items per work day. This explains why at a large corporation, I internalized "I can get 3 things done from my list per day". The other 1-2 items were usually taken up by meetings or sudden new priorities.

I'm sure that number is highly personal and depends a lot on how one tends to chunk their to do items. For example: Is "Write spec" one item, or 3 ("Research", "Draft", and "Revise")?

jonobie,
@jonobie@social.coop avatar

On May 10, 1994, I took a break from AP testing to watch the solar eclipse in Ohio. They deemed it important enough that we were allowed to leave the test, one at a time, with eclipse glasses. I dimly remember learning the next “major” event in the area would be in 2024. I tallied my age and realized I’d be ancient then. I remember thinking - I might even be DEAD! That’s so old.

I’m thrilled to report that I am NOT DEAD yet. Although I’m no longer in Ohio so won’t see the eclipse.
