Goddammit season 2 of Foundations is great. I'm annoyed at the end of every episode because it's the end of the episode. Only one more to go, and the suspense is killing me. Please don't let it be another two years until the continuation!

Techronic9876,

@veronica they’ve really done an amazing job with season 2

shepgo,
@shepgo@mastodon.social avatar

@veronica Although series 3 has been written, between the time needed to scout and shoot, and the current strike, we’re a bare minimum of a year from season 3

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@shepgo We're probably looking at 2025, unfortunately.

@veronica so just one episode before I can binge it!

Really looking forward to it!

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@tmr232 I hope you can watch it in 4K, because it looks spectacular in it. It's such a huge difference with stuff made to be viewed in high resolution.

@veronica I'm with you on this one!
Had my bookworm's doubts about the whole TV show, but let them go, and I'm just enjoying myself. Waiting for each new episode and googling details about season 3 😉

belfinwe,

@veronica Yeah, I’m enjoying it quite a bit.

Haven’t read the books, think I’ll wait until I’ve seen the entire series before reading them.

@belfinwe Only read a little bit of the books. They're quite different already from the start. I plan to read the books, but I already suspect I like the TV series a lot better.

Edit: I am often very disappointed by so-called classical Sci-Fi, so I have largely stopped reading the ones I missed.

@veronica @belfinwe I've felt the same about most 'classical sci-fi' I've tried to read, apart from Dune. 'Starship Troopers' was pretty good (despite all the politics), but more of a one-off. And 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' was so different I'm amazed they managed to get Blade Runner out of it 😅

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@siljelb @belfinwe Yeah, Dune was OK. But Starship Troopers is one of the most boring and unappealing Sci-Fi novels I've ever read. Still, it's the first Heinlein novel I've actually managed to read all the way through. I doubt I will ever waste more time on his work.

I read a lot of Jules Verne as a kid though, and loved those. Not sure how I'd feel now.

belfinwe,

@veronica @siljelb

Haven’t really read any classical sci-fi, so you have any suggestions of what’s a good first novel I’m open too suggestions 😀
Was thinking of a Jules Verne book a have here somewhere or The foundation when I’m done with Deaths end.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@belfinwe @siljelb I prefer more recent work, by a pretty large margin, but of what I've read, only Dune stands out as worth it. As well as 1984.

siljelb,
@siljelb@snabelen.no avatar

@veronica @belfinwe agree regarding 1984, as well as Dune!

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@siljelb @belfinwe Dune to me is to Sci-Fi what LotR is to Fantasy.

belfinwe,

@veronica @siljelb I’ve heard others say the same, and it is fairly high on the To-Read list.

siljelb,
@siljelb@snabelen.no avatar

@veronica @belfinwe ie the work that changed and inspired the genre for decades?

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@siljelb @belfinwe Perhaps that too, but I meant more in terms of epic storytelling, and the work being a corner stone of a writer's career. There is so much poured into the work compared to rapid publishing that most writers have to do to make ends meet.

siljelb,
@siljelb@snabelen.no avatar

@veronica @belfinwe true. Although LoTR and Tolkien's works in general holds such a special place in my heart that Herbert unfortunately can't quite compete with. The continued posthumous publishing by the authors' sons is another commonality I guess.

belfinwe,

@siljelb @veronica Almost tempted to reread LoTR next now 😀
Perhaps in English this time? 🤔

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@belfinwe @siljelb I've only read them in English, so can't compare. Last time I got the new audio books read by Andy Serkis. Recommended if you like audio books. 😊

siljelb,
@siljelb@snabelen.no avatar

@belfinwe @veronica I'm planning for my next read through, perhaps this autumn, to be in Nynorsk 😍

But yeah, if you've only read the Bokmål translation, you're in for a treat with the original English. Just make sure to get a post-2004 copy, as there were several long standing errors and omissions fixed in that edition.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@siljelb @belfinwe This is my most valued shelf in my own library. It's also the most expensive to replace 😁

belfinwe,

@veronica @siljelb Those are some really nice books 😍😀

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@belfinwe @siljelb The one by Darwin is also worth a mention. It's a 1901 illustrated edition 😊

siljelb,
@siljelb@snabelen.no avatar

@veronica @belfinwe I haven't tried to read Verne since I was a kid either, even though I have really good memories of especially Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. And come to think of it I was like 15 when I read Starship Troopers, so my memories of it may be a bit skewed 🫣

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@siljelb @belfinwe I love the movie. I rewatch it every now and then. I watched it a couple of months ago actually. 😊

siljelb,
@siljelb@snabelen.no avatar

@veronica @belfinwe which one?

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@siljelb @belfinwe Oh, I was still on Starship Troopers. Haven't watched 20000 Leagues since I was a kid.

siljelb,
@siljelb@snabelen.no avatar

@veronica @belfinwe ah right. I don't think I've ever seen a 20000 leagues movie. The Starship Troopers movie really annoys me, so I don't think I've watched all of it in ten years.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

Also, great line from the last episode:

Cleon/Day: You're projecting.
Seldon: [Chuckles] I am a hologram.

😁

shayz0rz,
@shayz0rz@mastodon.online avatar

@veronica This was one of my favorite moments!

Especially since, right at the same time, Empire was talking about Hari’s ends justifying a lot of means (or however he put it), and um…then, he did that at the end. Projecting more than the hologram, he was, I fear.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@shayz0rz I love/hate how they made us care about people on both sides of all that death and destruction.

shayz0rz,
@shayz0rz@mastodon.online avatar

@veronica 100% same. Bel and Glawen just about killed me, even if (in my opinion) they didn’t give Bel’s reaction enough time to land as hard as it could have.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@shayz0rz I don't know. I think it landed. What I would have liked to see more of was to what extent Cleon noticed.

shayz0rz,
@shayz0rz@mastodon.online avatar

@veronica Fair. I feel like it had an impact, yet just…there could’ve been a lot more. And I definitely wonder if there’s a shot that got cut somewhere that showed Cleon picking up on it. Then, again, self-absorption and getting off on destroying a planet are both pretty powerful distractions.
