Record-Breaking Runaway Stars Are Fleeing the Galaxy at Mach 6,000

SYFY’s The Ark (streaming now on Peacock) opens on a crew of explorers slumbering soundly in their cryochambers, when disaster strikes. Woken a year before their arrival at Proxima Centauri, the crew must work together, and quickly, to stay alive. Even the closest stars are pretty far away and getting to another star system in anything close to a reasonable amount of time means spinning up considerable speed.

For some reason I take this personally.

This is actually a surprisingly good series. The plot is well written, the acting is solid, and it's exceptionally well paced. I'm hoping to see a second season - there's a lot of potential here. The CGI wasn't quite where shows like the Expanse are at (clearly the show didn't have the same budget), but they did a great job with what they had. I'm hoping for a 2nd season.

A second season was announced in April 2023 ahead of the season one finale.

Here’s an article in Variety. The show had very high linear viewership on SyFy in the US.

“The Ark” opened on a high note for the network as the Feb. 1 series premiere broke a new record for the best in total viewers since January 2021, reaching 1.1 million, and best in the 18-49 demo since October 2021. “Resident Alien” and “Day of the Dead” previously held the two titles, respectively. The series reached 6.5 million viewers across all platforms.

Now that NBC Universal is also taking into account the need for content on it’s streamer Peacock as well for its overseas SyFy cable channels, we may see less short term decisions from SyFy US.
