Sir, this is a Lemmy’s.

computergeek125,

Bravo, I think this comment wins the internet for today.

Kolanaki, in Why is my bus trying to install OneDrive?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

It should not fail to install OneDrive on a bus because it is a bus. It should install, drive the bus once and then uninstall itself.

Hence the name, OneDrive.

Angriest upvote in a long time

NakariLexfortaine, in Why is my bus trying to install OneDrive?

It wants to be OneDrive away from retirement.

argh_another_username, in Why is my bus trying to install OneDrive?

Because one must drive the bus.

Marthirial, in i type ~150wpm. this is how fast the characters show up in facebook chat

There are like 35 scripts capturing every stroke; privacy is not going to invade itself.

Kiernian,

Heh. Can you imagine how fast Facebook et al would have to scale this stuff back if there were some kind of law that stated that any of their code other than css and html had to be executed on their own servers rather than in each user’s browser?

The CPU/RAM offload of using every end user’s browser/device instead of their own server cycles for this has to be immense.

stom,
@stom@lemmy.world avatar

That would be amazingly impractical. May as well say “what if all website were forced to be .txt files”.

Most website template frameworks (Bootstrap/Foundation) etc rely on Javascript for basic UI features. Imagine having to wait for the server to toggle a simple CSS class on your page any time the user wants to view a menu, togle a button, or view a popup/modal/lightbox/whatever.

maynarkh,

Heh, that’s what I thought first when I saw Google’s FLoC proposal. They’re moving the privacy invasion to be run on my computer!

MooseBoys, in phew, narrowly avoided TROJAN.GENERICKD.69873676 from my legitimate copy of rimworld

Are you certain it’s actually safe? There was a recent attack in which multiple Steam publisher accounts were hijacked to spread malware.

moosetwin,
@moosetwin@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

yeah rimworld wasn’t one of the games affected

lemann,

Damn, never heard about this. Good thing my Steam doesn’t autorun on startup

OrgunDonor,
@OrgunDonor@lemmy.world avatar

From the first paragraph of the article

Fewer than 100 Steam users had the games installed when the malware was added, and they’ve been directly notified of the risk by email, according to Valve.

Pretty sure Rim World is installed by more than 100 people.

Jiberish, in Thanks, I’ll just keep guessing what the limit is

We'll figure out this limit. Just keep reducing file size by half and increasing by a quarter. I have some vacation days to burn.

Bytemeister, in This takes the cake as the most braindead thing I've ever seen the Start Menu do

Nah. Most brain dead thing it does is when you search for something, and it brings up no results, so you remove the last letter and your results pop up.

Natanael,

Or when it refuses to show something you know exists on the computer until you enter the exact full file path

DarkenLM,

That's why I use Flow Launcher with the Everything plugin (now integrated on the Explorer).

Everything is an absolute godsend to deal with Windows' shitty indexer.

JokeDeity,

How do I integrate it? I didn’t like Everything as a separate program, but I think I would like it integrated into my system.

DarkenLM,

It's built-in to the Explorer plugin. I set the Indexer to Everything and personally use the et prefix for index searches.

tinysalamander,

This happens to me on Instagram and it makes me want to commit atrocities.

ryannathans,

Or you press enter to open it, and instead the list changes and it opens something unrelated

fartsparkles, in This takes the cake as the most braindead thing I've ever seen the Start Menu do

Use PowerToys Run instead. The Start menu is dead to me now.

    Oh. It’s Spotlight for Linux, then.

    w2tpmf,

    Can you map it to the Windows key?

    fartsparkles,

    Yes you can. You can even use PowerToys Keyboard Manager to remap keys.

    I’ve mapped the right Apps/Menu key to Win(left) and mapped Win(left) to Alt+Space to open PowerToys Run, effectively replacing Win(left) with Run entirely.

    w2tpmf,

    Nice. Might give this a try.

    Pyroglyph, (edited )
    @Pyroglyph@lemmy.world avatar

    I have it installed already, and I’d switch to using it in a heartbeat if it could replace the Start Menu in a way that didn’t break things. I often open the Start Menu purely to show the taskbar over fullscreen games in order to switch to something else. If Run did that (and if binding it to the Windows key didn’t break other shortcuts), it would be perfect for me.

    Edit: I stand corrected. It appears that Run does sometimes show the taskbar, but it seems inconsistent.

    HidingCat,

    Well, I use Powertoys Run for everything except that one thing (a way to break out of full-screen games). I'd consider that switched, since you're using that to start everything.

    I don't even shutdown via Start anymore.

    Oh, and the other reason to use Start menu is to start Powertoys it doesn't restart after an update. xD

    dustyData,

    Uh, Alt+Tab exists.

    MotoAsh,

    Alt tab only changes focus, it doesn’t bring up Windows specifically. When windows decides not to ACTUALLY keep the task bar on top, only going directly to it actually brings it up

    ubermeisters, (edited ) in we're fucked

    imagine you are just suddenly launched from west to east at 1,000 mph (1600 kph), along with all the soil and water around you, and everything touching them.

    Edit: Looks like 25,000mph (40,230kph) is the escape velocity for earths gravity, but i wonder how far in the air you would mind up? 1000mph tangent to earth surface has to get you some elevation I assume.

    Ryumast3r,

    I wouldn’t go very far, I’m surrounded by hills.

    ubermeisters,

    I don’t know… the boundary layer of air rotating with earth may rag doll you well over a few hills. Assuming the hills don’t shear off.

    theodewere,
    theodewere avatar

    i think everything would collapse toward the core if it all stopped spinning.. it would all crunch down to a much tighter, very spherical ball, because the spin is throwing everything outward, in addition to distorting the shape into an oblate form..

    ubermeisters,

    Assuming normal rate of gravity applies for that acceleration though right? So you still get flung tangent to earth surface at 1,000mph, but now also the ground is falling at the same rate as you once you start your decent? Wicked. I wonder if you make a complete orbit or not.

    theodewere, (edited )
    theodewere avatar

    well, we've already sort of thrown "gravity" out a fucking window with the whole stopping thing.. but yeah, i think we just start to spiral inward maybe..

    edit: and then i think everything just stops in a big crunch

    federalreverse,

    That documentary about his life in Belize was rather scary. tldw: Barely legal mistresses paid to play along with his poop fetish, founding a pharma company with a single employee working from a small hut, then holding press conferences presenting fake medical breakthroughs, financing local gangs, corrupting police with gifts, having his neighbor killed, finally returning to the US and running as a presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party and occasionally gracing cable news as a technology expert.
