dustyData,

So, the US is the enabling buddy who thinks they are helping their alcoholic friend by accompanying them and telling them to go home when they drink too much, but is instead endangering everyone by encouraging them to drive under the influence anyways.

Why can't I use my iPhone as a hot spot to my apple tablet if my phone is in my pocket?

In order to get my iPad to connect to my phone I have to take the phone out of my back pocket. I don’t have to unlock the phone or anything. Just take it out. If my phone is in my back pocket the iPad can’t detect the phone. Once the two are connected I can put the phone back into my bank pocket, and use the phone as a...

dustyData,

Same age, I don’t put anything on my back pockets, ever. It’s awfully uncomfortable and you risk breaking whatever you put there sitting on it. It also protects my hip and lower back.

dustyData,

You could either spend hundreds of hours being a slower programmer in order to learn something that squeezes a diminishing returns save on time. Or you can be a fast programmer now, albeit marginally slower than one that knows vim.

Local Network NAS is not something that the typical user that just scrolls memes on a browser and occasionally edits a document has to face. Setting that up on a Windows machine is just as convoluted on the permission side, but instead of writing neat commands, you have to hunt for buttons on nested upon nested settings dialogs that make no sense and don’t follow any logical structure anymore.

None, that’s the point. Your experience and what you see depend upon you and your choices. There’s no true Lemmy experience. The freedom and flexibility is the core of federation. You choose what your experience is, not a central arbitrary algorithm written by a for profit megacorp.

dustyData,

Luck is when opportunity meets preparation.

Discord doesn’t know what it wants to be, they just copied IRC without understanding why it was that way. Catered to gamers due to adding voicechat, then panicked and got confused by the surge of Slack, so they tried to be all serious, but not really, it’s a whole mess.

The point of servers and channels used to have a very direct and straight forward relationship with reality, it mapped one to one to actual physical servers and internal protocol structures. Discord doesn’t need to have servers and channels, to them they are communities and chat topics. But they don’t need to be that either. It is stupid and mind boggling, like Twitter clones using 150 character limits, that made sense when the platform was SMS exclusive, but why would you have such an artificial limitation in a platform that doesn’t even admit SMS input? Other than chasing some platform nostalgia or ideological extremism about platform format.

dustyData,

When the project manager forgets that the users are stakeholders, and are entitled to representation and influence.

dustyData,

Back? who said it ever left? Default fonts, sure are whatever, but do people know they can change fonts? And it can be whatever you want too, it doesn’t even have to be a Microsoft font.

dustyData,

Don’t get me started on OneDrive. I have rants.

dustyData,

It is literally where the word Lesbian comes from. It meant the people of Lesbos way before it were associated with homosexual women.

dustyData,

Apple is the worst, most unintuitive UI in the world. It’s pretty, but it is not functional. The same shit you just said about Linux applies to macOS. As soon as someone wants to do something other than the most basic shit with macOS, it won’t let you, will force you to jump through hoops or will require a higher than novice knowledge and skill with computers to make it do what you want it to. But I think Linux is ever more leaning towards mass appeal without losing it’s flexibility and power. Something that neither of the corporations can claim.

dustyData,

Shows you where Valve’s values are. Make it work and be functional first. Think about making it pretty later. I rather like it.

dustyData,

Friend, are you familiar per chance with ancient Greece? Humans have been labeling argumentative behavior since the dawn of language. All those things have Greek or Latin terms. Debate has been considered an art form and seriously studied for millennia. There’s no right way of answering a bad faith argument because it is contextual and made more difficult by the toneless nature of the written word. But in some contexts, even on the internet, you don’t have the option of ignoring it. Sometimes it is your job or your responsibility to answer to it, then you have to be creative and artful, depending on the circumstances and what your goal is.

dustyData,

I think by this point everyone on the Fediverse has argued with them and felt the same exasperation.

That’s when you start your next comment with “On this article I will provide logical proof that…” Then proceed to write a several thousand words treatise about the topic that slowly transitions into Shrek smut fanfiction, then try to see how far into the text they notice. People forget that a source is just a fancy way of saying “someone else said once that”. Not all sources are valid or authoritative. If I am making a subjective claim, I don’t need any fucking source, I am the source bitch.

dustyData,

Social media is dying.

You’ve never heard of Tiktok?

dustyData,

No, because I don’t have a Tiktok, but I’ve heard how shit it is. The point is that people aren’t using less social media, they’re using more. They just migrated to new ones. It doesn’t seem to be dying any time soon.

dustyData,

Get a Samsung S series FE (or Fan edition). They are usually cheaper versions of the flag ships with the same features but slightly lower specs.

dustyData,

I found the sweet spot on the Samsung A34. It has the things I want, but it isn’t flagship expensive and it has guaranteed 4 years of updates plus another year of support.

dustyData,

However, the thing is that Yuzu doesn’t do that. Yuzu doesn’t include any form of tooling that breaks encryption, facilitates ROM dumping or offer downloads of Nintendo Copyrighted software. They aren’t facilitating it, the user has to provide all of that chain of the emulation on their own. Hopefully this would be obvious to a judge.

dustyData,

Yuzu doesn’t do any encryption breaking. The user is meant to use their Switch to dump their keys, which are legally owned by the user. Then it uses those legal keys to decrypt the ROMs by the exact normal method that the Switch itself uses. They were going based on precedent legal rulings about console emulation. Copying the decryption keys and making copies of the software for archival purposes have both been previously ruled to be perfectly legal for the enduser and don’t constitute piracy. This suit will challenge that notion.

dustyData, (edited )

Yuzu itself doesn’t provide tools to dump keys and Roms from the Switch. The user has to procure them, or the means to dump them, themselves. Thus Yuzu doesn’t facilitates DRM circumvention. The user has to solve that part on their own. They do provide guides for how to do it on their website. But Yuzu themselves don’t make or distribute the tooling, and Yuzu the software is incapable of doing it.

dustyData,

To dump the keys, third party tools rely on DRM circumventing sploits. You essentially have to hack your own device, certain versions of Switch and certain software updates are no longer susceptible. But it remains that Yuzu doesn’t do any of that. Those tools and sploits were developed by others.

dustyData,

Well, at this point it is theoretical.
