There’s no added value to having multiple desktop environments, so almost no one would want to. A lot of applications use DE sensitive configurations and there’s potential for conflicts as well as libraries incompatibility. Which can result on paradoxical and bizarre behavior from some graphical apps. It’s odd that it happens but it’s also not something devs plan or account for, so they aren’t even considered bugs. You don’t install multiple DEs at the same time unless you’re purposefully trying to break something or you don’t know better.

The only use case currently is choosing between a DE with X or one with Wayland. But even that one could fuck your system.

For example, opening cinnamon experimental Wayland makes all my flatpaks stop working until reboot. Why? I don’t know, nobody knows. But if I keep using Wayland after reboot they work. If I change to regular cinnamon, they break again until reboot, when they get fixed as long as I keep using regular cinnamon. It just be like that.

dustyData,

It’s not. Its actually always been like that. Like I said, this kinds of problems are odd and rare. The real issue is that the most help you’d get from the devs teams is a shrug, as it is an unsupported use case. I actually do have both gtk and qt libraries running and they work nicely together.

dustyData,

Nothing can stop me!

Yes, you see, that’s part of the problem. You need impulse control and healthy boundaries.

dustyData,

Some of the worst shirts I’ve seen, both fabric quality wise and print wise, have been at concerts for my favorite bands. Some of the best as well. If you want something guaranteed to last a long time you have to pay for expensive custom made designs. But then again, this defeats the purpose of directly supporting your favorites with the extra merchandize.

dustyData,

Gender dysphoria, the psychological suffering caused by feeling like you are in the wrong body, is the disease. Being a trans person is not a disease, and using that as a basis for insulting or discriminating is inappropriate. Somewhat like autism is the mental disease but having autism is not a disease and it is inappropriate to treat a person as if it is the entirety of their existence. Way too often illness has been used as the basis of mistreatment and outright extermination. People have diseases, they aren’t their diseases. We have introduced this notion from the fields of ethics in medicine and it’s why a lot of things are no longer used in language nor in concept: the disabled, the retarded, the syphilitic, the autistic, etc. People aren’t diseases and they aren’t their disease.

If you knew a thing or two about the history of gender, you’d know that medicalization of gender is precisely one of the main historical roots to justify discrimination, criminalization and abuse towards trans people. Medicalization of gender has literally killed millions of people throughout history.

I’d argue that there’s like 4 ways that 90% of distros work like and even they are extremely similar to each other. You got Fedora, Debian, Arch, and whatever Gentoo users do when they are in the dark in the basement. The rest are niche and weird stuff that not even Linux hardcore fans know all about. Similarly there’s only two desktop things that matter, GTK or QT. Everything else is us nerds nick-picking.

Ok, there’s also nixOS and the new wave of atomic monolithic containerized whatever distros, but they are like, super new and the resulting system is indistinguishable for the end used from the other 4 main.

dustyData,

Gotta love techno maniacs, suggesting implanting a microchip on your child is somehow a reasonable suggestion. Have people heard of keys? buttons? hell, even Bluetooth tags?

If the kid is old enough to stay at home alone for a few hours, they’re probably old enough to have and operate a key and push a couple of buttons on a touchscreen or tablet.

dustyData,

No, you see. One of the requisites of jokes is that they have to be funny. Because I assure you, OC isn’t joking.

dustyData,

Because fascist conservative domination of society depends on a constant stream of fear, uncertainty, and doubt about an ever changing cultural opponent that unifies the dazed and confused in outrage against said real or fantasized other. Thus making them unaware of how much they’re being abused and exploited while also mobilizing them to fight in defense of the same oppressors who constantly propagandizes them.

dustyData,

Don’t get so teary eyed. Farmers have been fucked by capitalism since the dawn of time. This is about corporate pockets, not about farmers. Farmers don’t get laid off, they just die and nobody cares.

dustyData,

This is JK Rowling. She doesn’t fall into holes, she is the one at the bottom digging.

dustyData,

Painstakinglly detailed scripts and smooth jazz, mostly.

dustyData,

On actually developed countries there are laws that force employers to wait a year before they re-hire laid off employees. They can re-hire early but they have to pay a lot of money to the employee and an additional labor tariff in taxes. Precisely to avoid this kind of fuckery.

dustyData,

Love the passive-aggressiveness and completely agree with it. Android and ChromeOS are Linux. They should report as such. Let’s see those stats change.

dustyData,

Apple is used to North American courts who are paid by everyone to always interpret laws on the corporation’s favor. This experience is new to them, actual logic and common sense in a court of law.

dustyData,

Which is worse, because it implies malice.

But never the less, this tactic would work perfectly in a US court. It probably won’t as EU courts don’t make decisions based on the judge’s feefees like US courts, and precedent and case law mean nothing in European civil law systems.

dustyData,

I agree but that has no bearing on my first comment. Common law and civil law are two fundamentally different systems. And Apple seems to always operate as if they’re dealing with a US court, being petty and throwing tamtruns, trying to cheat and weasel their way out. Sure the European courts have their share of corruption, but Apple doesn’t seem to have found said levers yet.

Mega corporations aren’t magical all powerful infallible entities either. They’re just a bunch of entitled twats with too much money. They’re no better at making decisions as the average Joe.

dustyData,

I deconstruct all commands when used in spoken word, so I pronounce it “change ownership”. I also call ls, “list“ and cd “change directory”. For some reason this completely confuses and disorients everyone in the room.

dustyData,

Sounds like a buzz and a sine wave mixed and lots of reverb. It reminds me of a flute. The truth is that a lot of these sounds are usually synthesized, it is the signature style of Massive Attack. As a result it shares a lot of similarities with the kind of simple analog sound makers used in hospital equipment. It doesn’t sound sampled to me, at least, but I could be wrong, it has a lots of things layered on top to say for sure. If anything, it reminds me of the stereotypical code blue alert used in drama shows. Though I have never encountered such a thing in real life, usually those things are communicated verbally without any sort of alarm. Hospitals actually avoid alarming or excitedly modes of operation, preferring calm and collected action.

dustyData,

I love the fact that at least 3 of these issues are still Microsoft’s fault.

dustyData,

The wonderful thing about living in a fully Linux world is that you can ditch NTFS. None of my computers or disks use it. It’s all ext4 or btrfs, and then ZFS on my media server.

dustyData,

People like to bitch and moan about the inconveniences endured during covid and would use terms like “doom sayers” to insult people who promoted lockdowns and vaccines. Under the guise of “it wasn’t that bad”.

Yeah, no shit Sherlock. Without lockdowns and vaccines it would’ve been ten times worse. We actually got relatively scot-free. Huge swaths of the developing world endured millions of deaths.

The Girl in the Graveyard

“Hello I’m Laura and I collected this story myself when I was 12 years old. It says that some girls and boys were at the party and there was a graveyard down the road and they were talking how scary it was. And one of the boys said: “Don’t ever stand on the grave up that yard because the person inside will grab you, will...

dustyData,

It just occurred to me that most scary stories around graveyards are aimed at teens or children. Since they’re the ones who are less likely to have experiences with death and loss. So for them a graveyard is more likely a generic collection of tne random remains of people, while adults are more likely to associate it with relatives and loved ones.

dustyData,

OP said “asking for a tip”. If I want to tip a particularly good server experience, everyone should be free to do so. But asking for it, and it comes to mind those places that explicitly stipulate that 10% is minimum mandatory tipping, should be illegal. That’s a hidden fee, not a tip.
