This seems like the bike equivalent of people really into #efficiency who spend so much time refining their #workflow that they take longer troubleshooting the process than working.
Seems like a neat concept. I bet the number of parts and weight could probably be cut down by 75% with some dedicated engineering and development behind it.
This has already been done and was shit. If you don’t want to do motorcycle things then don’t ride a fucking motorcycle. Anything that takes any element of control from the rider is an added danger. Being able to stay in or get to the gear you want, when you want to is one of the most important tools a motorcyclist has to get and stay out of nearly every kind of trouble.
Edit: went back and looked after my knee jerk reaction and saw that this was in fact for pedal bikes. I still say fuck that! It’s a stupid answer to a question nobody is asking.
Automatic transmissions also take control away from car drivers. As someone who can still drive manual, I don't know that I ever will again. I don't really want to shift through 8 gears. Even if this were for a motorcycle, it could be theoretically implemented to be seemless as male and make riding much simpler.
Solo inventor says he's not out to replace gears, just offer an alternative.
"I always imagined it going along the same line as when automobiles got automatic transmissions, and it got easier for more people to drive a car," Mercer said. Lycra-clad weekend warriors, gearheads, professionals, and retrogrouches may always prefer direct control of their cogs. "I just think the vast majority of people out there are in the same boat, where they find themselves in too high a gear going uphill, and it can be a pain to get to a low-enough gear quickly," he said.
