Samsung’s new 98-inch 8K TV is the projector-beating home theater upgrade I’ve been waiting for

Like most of the other best Samsung TVs, the new 98-inch QN900C has Samsung’s Gaming Hub and Motion Xcelerator Pro. That delivers 4K at up to 120Hz, rising to 144Hz with compatible PCs. There’s also support for AMD FreeSync Premium Pro as well as NVIDIA G-Sync like most of the best gaming TVs have.

I’m less excited about resolution now than I am about something like microLED that would greatly improve response times and color reproduction. There’s isn’t much in the way of 8k content anyway and good luck playing games at that resolution with a decent framerate. It’s my understanding that the larger size would be better for microLED too, since the components wouldn’t be packed in too tight a space.

It'll be a long time before anything can reasonably generate that kind of resolution. Streaming is almost definitely out, and the GPU required to run a game at that at anything but minimum settings...

That said, gotta look to the future I guess. Gotta wonder if there's any tangible benefit to going over 4K, unless you're nose is up against the screen anyway.

Sounds great for running older games at stupidly high resolutions lol

Heh true.

MorrisonMotel6,

I guarantee it’s loaded with ads and bloatware too. Samsung is the worst for that

Telodzrum,

Meh

Buy a TV for the panel and that’s it. Only real schmucks are using any of the software on the TV.

norske,

I made that mistake when I first bought my LG tv. The ads and bloat got too bad. Luckily I was able to factory reset and then never connected it to the internet. Use a cheap little 4k android streaming box made by Asus.

shinjiikarus,

My TV hasn’t been connected to the internet except for very specific updates I preemptively researched what they included. Otherwise it’s a „dumb TV“.

CmdrShepard,

Their product quality has been decimated from where it was 10 years ago. I actively avoid them when shopping for TVs (and especially appliances) now.

housepanther,

I was saying to myself, “I wonder what kind of home equity loan or mortgage I’d need to be able to afford that!” Then I actually read the article and it’s only $6,999.00. Hold on while a shit a check for that amount. 😆

teraflopsweat,

I mean that’s a crazy amount to pay for a TV imo, but I was 100% expecting it to be a lot crazier.

Ath47,

That’s the price of their previous model, and the article suggests that this one will be quite a bit more expensive. Definitely not a “projector beater” if you don’t have around ten grand burning a hole in your pocket.

I bought an Acer projector and a ceiling mounted pull down screen fifteen years ago for ~700€ and that gear is still going strong.

Why in the world would I want to spend ten times that?

housepanther,

Even if I had that kind of cash to part with, it certainly would not be on a TV. It’s be doing a major overhaul on my home computer lab.

CmdrShepard,

I remember a magazine ad from when modern flat screen LCD/plasma TVs came out and they were like $15,999 for a 55," something you could get at Costco now for $200. This probably will never see price reductions like that but still.

Boiglenoight,

Right? Still, eventually this will come down to reasonable prices. I’ll probably be in my 50’s by then, sure.

Bilbo,

Projector beating is a bold claim! I doubt I’ll ever get a big TV again. The idea of trying to move a 98" TV up the stairs seems crazy. I’ve got my 120" retractable projection screen and I’m happy.

Projectors certainly have their limitations, but I really like that mine just disappears into the ceiling when I’m not using it instead of taking up my entire wall.

alaphic,

What kind of projector do you have?

mosiacmango,

Thehookup on youtube does tons of indepth projector/screen testing and reviews. Great channel if youre in the market.

Bilbo,

Optoma GT1090HDR

I’m pretty happy with it, although it doesn’t do 4k. But, it’s super bright at 4200 lumens.

threeLetterMeyhem,

I just put an 85" in my basement. That thing is annoying enough that it can stay with the house if/when I move. A 98" TV seems like it would be impossible to get down the same flight of stairs. If I upgrade again in this house it will 100% be a projector.
