"At Bumble, the women-centered dating app that calls Austin home, executives say that about one third of their 150 Texas employees have left the state entirely, opting for remote work...The reason: It’s not just hard to keep talented employees in Austin in a post-Roe world, where doctors might not perform even medically necessary abortions for fear of reprisal, it’s also hard to attract them to Texas in the first place."

I am curious why a company such as bumble would stay in Texas at all.

Overall, the cost of living in Austin is 119.3, which is 19.3% higher than the U.S. average of 100. This means that it costs residents of Austin $119.30 to buy the same amount of goods and services that cost $100 in the U.S. on average.

Austin is ranked at 71 on a list of 500 U.S. metro areas when it comes to the cost of living.

Since SB8 went into effect 9/1/21, it has been harder to recruit people to Texas. I hear this in recruiting in higher ed, especially after controversies with Texas A&M https://www.texastribune.org/2023/07/25/texas-a-m-professor-opioids-dan-patrick/.

Nationwide, fewer medical residents are applying to red states https://abcnews.go.com/US/future-doctors-discouraged-working-states-abortion-bans/story?id=98947099.

I'm sure this hiring and retention is only worsening with the state going after gender-affirming care for minors.
