Chemistry is like physics where the particles have personalities - and chemists love talking about the really nasty ones. It makes for fun reading, like Derek Lowe's column "Things I Won't Work With". For example, bromine compounds:

"Most any working chemist will immediately recognize bromine because we don't commonly encounter too many opaque red liquids with a fog of corrosive orange fumes above them in the container. Which is good."

And that's just plain bromine. Then we get compounds like bromine fluorine dioxide.

"You have now prepared the colorless solid bromine fluorine dioxide. What to do with it? Well, what you don't do is let it warm up too far past +10C, because it's almost certainly going to explode. Keep that phrase in mind, it's going to come in handy in this sort of work. Prof. Seppelt, as the first person with a reliable supply of the pure stuff, set forth to react it with a whole list of things and has produced a whole string of weird compounds with brow-furrowing crystal structures. I don't even know what to call these beasts."

It just generates words based on statistical models based on what humans wrote (though now it's probably choking on its own products). It's like trying to work out the height of a particular person by getting the average of all the heights of all the people.

Study suggests lingering coronavirus in tissues may contribute to long COVID symptoms.

"The persistence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in tissues from multiple organs was observed at several time points following COVID-19 recovery. Nevertheless, viral detection was markedly lower at 4 months, thus suggesting a slow but adequate viral clearance."

At the federal level, taxation does not fund anything. It doesn't go from your wallet to the government to be spent again. It gets deleted. Taxes delete money to counteract the spending (that is always new money) that would otherwise be more inflationary.

And whether money is 'new' or 'old' is fairly irrelevant. There's nothing magical about money that's recently printed.

Yes, very few people make a living doing art, and even fewer make a living doing the art they want. Maybe this is just me, but it seems like there's something about art that is anti-fascist and anti-capitalist. Authoritarians fear self expression, arts always seem the first to go when things get more conservative, and yet it has never stopped us. If they take everything away, we will draw on cave walls with charcoal from a fire, make dolls of corn husks, carve bones into beads, make bowls of mud, write stories in blood, make musical instruments out of anything, we will remember our history through song. We will pass these things down as evidence that we could never completely be silenced, we were here, we matter.

ariaflame,
@ariaflame@masto.ai avatar

@RickiTarr They like pretty things they can brag about their friends to, but not art, because art at its fundamentals helps us to see the world as it is, or as it could be and it's a little too much truth for authoritarians.

Dear UK residents. I’m sorry to be tedious, but I’m going to do the trans Cassandra thing again.

The government is now moving towards regarding trans people as effective children until the age of 25.

This will be established as precedent and then used to screw over any and all young adults who can’t escape from abusive parents, especially young women.

If you want to do anything about this, you need to fight for trans people. Yes, you. Now.

We all know that isn’t going to happen to any significant extent though.

As you were.

ariaflame,
@ariaflame@masto.ai avatar

Billionaires who condemned Trump are now flocking to his campaign.
