xep,

So 'moderate' 996 work culture is okay?
Also, this is an article from 2021; has anything changed since then?

flicker,

In healthcare, in the US. I’ve had to do this. Last year, I spent 6 months doing it.

You really do wish you were dead.

BarrelAgedBoredom,

That’s been my average week for about a year now. Couldn’t pay my bills if I didn’t pick up the OT. Also healthcare

harderian729,

Do you live in a major city?

BarrelAgedBoredom,

I live in a large city but I wouldn’t consider it “major” in the sense of places like LA, Miami, New York, Boston, etc despite having a larger population than some of them

This post is three years old

Itsamelemmy,

9am to 9pm 6 days a week. I’ve done similar in the US, but for a month or two due to staff shortage. Fuck that as a permanent schedule.

Tylerdurdon,

Man, sometimes when I read things like that, I realize how lucky I’ve been this whole time. Corps are just out of control.

rdyoung, (edited )

In the USA, our overtime laws would make that schedule extremely lucrative. I worked a similar schedule one summer when waiting tables. I now work for myself and regularly work a similar schedule (5am-5-6pm+) 5 days a week, sometimes I will not work on Saturday or Sunday but sometimes I will work in the afternoon. I drive for a living, a few apps and my own service.

Not_mikey,

Overtimes only for hourly workers. A lot of people doing this are on salary and don’t get anything extra for this schedule besides not being fired.

rdyoung, (edited )

If the company you are currently with isn’t able or willing to make that overtime up via other days off when work allows or with extra pay for the time, a bonus, something, you need to find a different company.

For example, my wife had been working some stupid hours because her company was in a growth phase (and still is) but now they have enough people that her bosses can chip in to help her when needed so she can take time off and both of her direct bosses basically told her to “take some fucking time off” and even with the work load were fine with her taking off, it’s her that doesn’t like coming back to a full queue and email inbox.

Azzu,

Aren’t companies always in a “growth phase”?.. What you’re telling sounds like extreme exploitation to me

rdyoung, (edited )

Don’t jump to conclusions here. This company actually does take care of their people. Unlimited PTO and they mean it. Better than the best insurance that is self funded and more. She expects her bonus this year to be between 5k and 8k. Her team (and her) before moving up to management has a hard line max on work per day. She is doing work that if the company tried to exploit like that they would regret it immediately because shit work would make it through and their clients would not be happy.

She was originally IC with a company and was one of the first few people hired. They were bought out by a bigger fish and that company is close to a IPO but they are waiting for the market and timing to be just right to pull the trigger. They just hired a bunch of people and she is now running her team, they have made moves like splitting the teams up and creating new groups to focus on certain things to make everyones jobs easier.

As I said and clearly you didn’t read or understand. 2 of her bosses, 1 in particular were telling her to take more time off, even before they hired enough to allow them to chip in and help when needed. Again, it wasn’t them asking her to work more, it was her not being comfortable leaving stuff undone and coming back to even more.

And no, companies aren’t always in a growth phase, not like hers. They are in a niche of a niche industry that is booming. And 90% of the company is work from home without a pay adjustment for locale so we could move to an even lower cost of living area and she would still make the same, she also never has to go to the office but she is probably welcome if we were ever in NYC.

Azzu,

Don’t jump to conclusions here

I’m trying to, but then you immediately say stuff like this:

Unlimited PTO and they mean it.

No, obviously they don’t mean it. This is calculated propaganda. Just try actually taking unlimited time off, of course that won’t go well. The calculation by the company is that the employees, out of loyalty, will take less time off than if they would give a generous, fixed amount, that actually has to be used. And it seems like in case of your SO, it is working perfectly, since she’s not taking time off.

This all really sounds incredibly calculated by the company. I even believe that her bosses believe they’re being nice, but the actual result if you look at it is the not-taking-time-off, which is perfectly in the interest of the company.

I don’t presume to criticize what you’re doing or dismiss your perspective, I’m just saying how it looks to me from what you’re saying. And for me it looks like fake virtue. Maybe I’m too cynical, certainly possible. I assure you, I have no ill intent here.

Seriously. You need to pull your head out of your ass.

My wife got really lucky with this company. They are not run like most. They are actually based out of one of the Nordic countries (don’t remember exactly which one) which explains why they do things the way they do.

You need to start reading and understanding what people are saying to you. The limit daily is 10 transcripts. Sometimes that takes longer than 8-9 hours, sometimes way less. When someone is done, they are done and not expected to do anything more even with a huge back log. If there is a backlog and someone steps up to do one or two more to help out, my wife and her boss usually figure out a way to give them a half day or another full day off at some point. And if you don’t offer, it’s not held against you.

If I could sit still long enough I would have no problem working on one of the teams that work with hers.

As for the time off. Yes, she takes time off and is getting better about taking more and more.

I’m done here because I don’t need to defend them anymore and I know I can’t change the mind of a zealot. The company is alphasense and you can look it up if you feel the need. Based on this convo though, I doubt you would be a good fit with them.

Randomgal,

Those corporate boots must be real yummy.

rdyoung, (edited )

You’re a bit of an asshole, huh?

What in that comment led to that conclusion aside from not being smart enough to think before you type?

I am the polar opposite of whatever you think that statement meant.

Go fuck yourself.

Azzu,

You seem very angry for some reason xD

theangryseal,

2020 was hell for me. 6AM-9:30PM 3 or four days a week. 10 hours the other 4-5 days. It was the best year I’ve ever had financially though.

I finally found someone and she just sits and watches tv all day. I couldn’t be happier. She’s always on time, only calls out for real shit, considers work a break from farming.

It’s been wonderful.
