If you're on Medium, and you write essays (no politics, however) or fiction, please let me know. I'm planning to be a Medium subscriber this year to support writers.
Also if you're not there, I hope you can be - it's just an economical way for me to support you as my currency is shite :)

@justin Already subscribed and followed! BTW, do you have more than one account on medium? In case I missed it haha. I'm glad that you're still there btw. I know some people say that Medium's payouts have been declining and it's not worth it anymore. However, don't 100% leave the platform! Allow (poorer) folks like me to also pay you guys ;D

@liztai Just the one account.

There’s a lot of people who write about Medium because it makes them a lot of money. Those people are boring and I tend not to pay them any attention.

I have no plans to leave Medium. It’s both me and my publication’s 10 year anniversary this year!

@justin I love your enthusiasm for a platform that is universally hated hahaha. Meanwhile, Sustack is melting. I hope it lasts longer than I think but it's not looking good.
Someone needs to do better PR ... their big tickets are leaving, but then, most of them would leave once they reach a certain threshold as it is not worth it after a while to stay.

@liztai I think this is different. The publications leaving are too prominent. I pay for both Garbage Day and Platformer and those were like the Substack Crown Jewels — they’re even featured in the App Store images for Substack. They wouldn’t have left if the platform didn’t completely botch this entire situation. They really showed us who they are over the last year. Big part of why I left.

@justin Yeah, so I'm preparing myself for that eventual day. I don't really care about their moral stance (sorry!) but I'm more concerned about their financial situation. To me the most egregious thing they did was when they asked the people on the platform to "invest" in them. I don't think the money is going to come back.

@liztai Platformer’s last issue said moving to Ghost will save them “tens of thousands of dollars a year.” On the other hand, that’s serious money Substack already can’t afford to lose. I don’t believe for one second the platform is profitable.

liztai,

@justin TBH I never even believed it when things were good lol. But I'm a cynical lass.
I really hope they can turn things around, but they really should've handled things better. :/

@liztai @justin Along with everything you’ve mentioned, they’re just another closed shop. I don’t need any more of those, Medium fills my quota!

I’ve started the ball rolling to make the shift to Buttondown. It’s going well so far.

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@ellane I think I may just stick to WordPress cos it has the newsletter function 😁 one day I may be able to afford the $$ for it! @justin

@liztai @justin I feel very appreciative to finally have enough paid subscribers to cover that fee. TBH my attitude to Substack is similar to yours. I’m leaving more for long term stability and independence’s sake than any moral stance.

@ellane Same. I am far too cynical to ascribe any moral value to any platform. @justin
