#WritersCoffeeClub May 1: OMG! What happened to your MC's parents?

They're at home, wondering how they could possibly have let their little girl die like that, even though she's very much alive, trapped, a long long way away...

May 2 Have you had an idea part way through a project that required extensive rewriting?

Yes, but the more interesting story is the inverse. My main character was biracial, and I'm not, and in realized that fact wasn't present in the text at all. As in, I wasn't doing it justice. A find/replace on her last name was all I needed to do.

May 3: Does your work include pictures, maps or other custom graphics? Share your pics.

No! Specifically not. My work is (so far) a creature of language. Pictures would ruin it.

Except that I have a very specific image in my head for the cover of my novella, should it ever be published.

May 4: What's the worst thing about being a writer?

Trying to find people who'd click with your work and convince them to give it a try. They're out there, and they would love what I have for them, but the world is full of people shoving "content" in their faces, so they (all of us, really) habitually turn away and turn up our headphones.

May 5: Is there a certain kind of story or arc that is easier for you to write as a short story than others?

My shorts were often comedy sketches. If I wanted to goof on a trope, I wrote a short.

6 May: Have you ever copied a piece from another book or movie as an homage?

Not that I can think of? My work in progress is an elaborate commentary on Star Wars as copaganda/pro-war, but that's not homage. That's critique!

May 7: Do you add a copyright statement to your work? How comprehensive is it?

I throw it in the corner, but a) It's not required because copyright applies automatically to works that are copyrightable (something that some copyright activist actually fight against, but anyway), and b) nobody will read my work let alone steal it, so I'm not actually all that worried.

May 8: When writing technical or scientific detail, how much is plausible versus imagined?

I research stuff to see if it's theoretically possible and then describe the concept but without enough detail to be proved wrong. Like, I have a space station with a rotating hab ring for artificial gravity, but I'm not going to give it a diameter! Readers will just see that my math is wrong.

May 9: What's the minimum time you can work on your writing? Do you need a long, clear period?

I can do some light editing any time, but to create new "pages" takes probably an hour or so to get going, get into the zone.

May 10: Do you know any good sources for publishing information?

Sigh... pass.

May 11: What character have you written that's most unlike you?

There's one coach/master in the murder space cult who's all business, pure practicality. Very physically disciplined. All my other characters have pieces of me in them. Not her. At all.

May 13: When does AI cross the line between helpful tool and problematic tech for writing and publishing?

When employers use it to increase workload and/or decrease pay. I'm sure but there are other objectionable practises, but that's my line.

Edit: Dammit! Forgot the horrendous business practises of setting it up (subaltern labour) and the waste of electricity and water.

May 14. Do you have a sense of how much plot you need for how long a manuscript.

Yes. I mimic the number of beats and subplots and secondary cast I've experienced in books I've read. I'm a little bogged down in my MS right now, but I believe I'm gong to arrive pretty much on at the word count I set.

May 15: Ever attended a writer's fair/festival to promote your work?

Have to be published first.

#WritersCoffeeClub May 16 What's your target audience? Why?

Leftist nerds.I like to riff on tropes and twist them to reveal the shitty politics underneath. My WIP is essentially the Jedi academy from the pov of a teen who's abducted into it,revealing how deeply fucked it is to teach children to kill the children who manage to escape the cult. That story is way more meaningful if you know Star Wars and always kinda thought there was something very gross at the centre of it.

#WritersCoffeeClub May 17: Other than writing, what's your go-to creative outlet?

Do I... have to...?

(The other thing I am doing for stress relief is trying to learn #Linux, because fuck corporate OS's, but that's not "creative.")

May 18: Have you written sections where action occurs against the clock? How did you do it?

I have a short story about a man and his toddler son that spans the length of a day. I 100% cheated and put "2pm" and such in as scene headings. It got the job done.

My novel had a vague countdown to a tournament that I have tried to hint at through dialogue and narration, but also cranking up tension before the big day. I have not got that working the way I want it to.
