My guess is it will probably take some time to sort itself out.
Reddit took a long time to diversify and grow into a platform that had a community for pretty much every interest or hobby imaginable. When it started, it wasn’t that diverse. It was pretty much just news, games, coding and politics. The fediverse should eventually get there so long as people keep using it - the way it’s set up makes it hard to permanently kill.
For kbin specifically, I think its success is predicated on federation restarting and getting the spam under control. My understanding is that these will be solvable once the instance is handed over/under new management.
The nice thing about kbin is it bridges the microblog and threads, which Mastodon and Lemmy don’t do. Of those I think Mastodon is the better option, if only because its user base is less… volatile? Not sure if that is the right word.
To me it seems like federation has been an issue for a while in different ways. Threads not going to other instances (inconsistently), threads from other instances that either show none of the native comments (even though a Kbin comment may federate still for some reason) or they do and then a kbin comment doesn't go over, Kbin feeling empty and then later old threads pop up, replies from other instances showing up late or not at all etc.
I really hope it’s fixed soon. Kbin has so much potential relative to other fediverse platforms, and it’d be a shame if it just ends up being associated with spam. It also feels like Kbin has lost a lot of its early momentum, and I worry that getting defederated could really damage future growth.
I wonder will Ernest continue to code kbin after he turns the instance over? Of course, he needs to take care of himself first - his condition sounds like it may have been worse than we originally thought.
I really prefer kbin over the other instances I've tried and I've tried to remain faithful, but if the spam issue, downtime, and defederating continue ...
Maybe it would be better to disable new accounts creation, for a while.
But I wonder, do all instances get all this spam and manage to cut it better, or is just kbin that's being targeted?
I originally went with kbin.social because it was the instance run by the guy who was the dev of the software I ultimately wanted to use on my own instance (because I wanted both threads and microblogging in the same place). I kinda lost faith in this instance because I was effectively locked out for a week or two. It more so scared me off of someone else hosting my data than this specific instance, but... the result is the same.
I also kinda lost faith in the future of the codebase, because the root cause(s) (whatever they may be) of the lack of administration on the instance will surely affect Ernest's ability to actively develop it.
Was using kbin.run (without logging in) to at least keep current (as much as one can without subscriptions), and I saw that it was running mbin (an actively developed fork of kbin), so when I created my own instance (just in the last few days), I went with mbin.
I hope that good things come to Ernest, but the project is stagnant, and the new admin is an unknown quantity to me, so... yeah. I still come back to keep up to date, but it's not my home instance anymore.
My reflex to reply was triggered by your comment about defederation. I've subscribed to as many magazines as I could from here (that I was already following, and that didn't trigger a 500 error), and I hope to maintain those. I guess we'll see how that goes.
Edit: I'm dumb. This whole post is about federation not working and I posted it from my personal instance. I guess you'll see it too when federation is working again.
Same here. I actually only came here by accident, I misclicked and decided to look around for old-time's sake.
I sent Ernest a bunch of money back when the Reddit exodus first happened, and I don't regret that but I do feel sad that it seems like kbin's having so many problems. Hopefully Ernest's realized that he can't do literally everything himself now, that could be an opportunity to clean things up.
I have been away from home for a long time now and do not have all accesses. I will try to restore access in the coming days. The care of the instance will also be handed over....
@Pamasich thanks so much for updating. I am a diehard kbin fan but I was mostly worried about Ernest's health and it's good to know he's communicating somewhere.
I really hope Ernest recovers and does what's best for his health, for it is a priority. I am also happy to know he is going to entrust the instance to someone who'll keep it going because I was worried that for the few days it's been, that it'd be the end of KBin. So much spam, so many bots and the errors were really showing the signs.
My particular problem: while kbin was mostly down this last week, a user posted an absurd number of posts to the microblog of a magazine I moderate (/m/food). I'd like to bulk delete all of their posts to that magazine. Is there a way to do that?...
Im curious if there is a way to have a backup account on another instance or to move to one between kbin and mbin? mainly to auto move susbscriptions and such. I saw a thing for mastadon where you log in on both sides but I can't find an option like that for kbin/mbin
I’m having to register to Lemmy directly now, when I’m used to posting from KBin’s instance. But now the errors is getting so bothersome that I can’t even surf around currently on it. The 50x error comes up after everytime I post somewhere, like make a thread....
Hi Ernest - hope everything is going well and that you are in good health.
Many of us on #kbin have been unable to log on or view content for about a week now. Have you identified the problem and made a plan to restore the site?
I also want to thank you for all your hard work. Personally, Kbin is my preferred #fediverse platform. I can’t imagine how much work goes into keeping it running.
Since the site has been down for all but a few hours of the last week, I've really wanted somewhere I can get a little information about what's going on....
For the last two weeks, I was able to get only like 10% of the time onto kbin. Maybe even a month. The other times it is “upgrading infrastructure over the next few days” message. I see nothing anywhere explaining what is going on. I finding myself going back to Reddit….
Which instance?
So, wading through the illegal prescription drug spam to post this....
Anybody know when Kbin will start federating again?
Can’t help but notice that federation isn’t working. Is there a backlog, or another problem?

Hello you beautiful people!...
Can someone take over KBin?

Is there a place off Kbin to get information about what's going on with Kbin?
