New here. Migrated from Reddit. Still trying to figure out Lemmy - whatโs everyoneโs experiences like coming from Reddit and does Lemmy serve as a good alternative? Pros and cons/differences?...
Welcome. Its been great for me so far. Whatever instance you are currently on the amount of politics and echo chamber does matter. So feel free to comment and enjoy. If you have a complaint try another instance (or even Kbin) to see if this helps. Also to note that there is much more control about what communities and people you can interact with
I've been discussing this on Mastodon too, but more focused on features and limitations related to federation rather than people being dumber in one place or the other. But I also want more open conversations, which is one of the things I believe ActivityPub helps with.
So instead of voting for Lemmy I'll go ahead and say I prefer Kbin since I've found it easier here to interact with posts from other fediverse platforms.
Just read carefully the rules of each group/magazine/community as everyone is free to tidy up their spaces as they wish, reasonably or not.
I had a 3-month ban from a community once and had no idea until I did a mod log search on my own username about 6 months later.
Thinking back to how I could possibly have failed to even notice, I think it's just that kbin still displays the comments of banned kbin users so I was probably still getting interactions through that.
They are. Itโs not shown on Lemmy itself, but anyone who federates with another instance gets to know who voted on what, and sometimes that information is made public to their entire instance (this is the case with kbin).
In strict technical terms, yeah itโs okay, albeit with the shortcomings to be expected of a smaller development team. In terms of population and activity with this format, I think it may be at the top compared to alternatives as well.
Thereโs still others and other software options though for this format that people could try, which honestly may even be technically better, but lacking population/activity means theyโre in an odd spot.
The first of these youโll read about on here are likely Kbin/Mbin, possibly followed by PieFed or still-in-development Sublinks. Kbin/Mbin is definitely the runner-up in terms of federated Reddit-alternatives, as it was one of the few options available at the time people were leaving Reddit.
PieFed and Sublinks have emerged more recently with different priorities and approaches compared to Lemmy, but with the same desire to offer a federated option for people to deploy.
The last you may read about around here would be of stuff like Discuit, Lobste.rs, Raddle (and any other sites built with Postmill), Tildes, and the like, which are all most like Reddit in terms of their being stand-alone sites, unconnected to any others running the same underlying server software. However each of these, I think, may have lower population than the cumulative population of the Lemmy network of sites.
All that said, cutting to your last question: ultimately it heavily depends on the instance/site you settle into.
Lemmy isnโt a monolith, which is both its greatest strength and weakness compared to Reddit. You may be able to find a Lemmy instance/site that heavily blocks out politics and moderates lightly, but the irony of this is that it means it may have to be overly-policed to achieve that, and might appear less active in the process from heavy disconnection/defederation from any instances/sites that permit political posts/discussion.
Right now though, much of Lemmy is heavily political, and itโs arguably because of lax moderation to keep political posts/discussions to relevant communities, which is itself probably in part because of lacking moderation tools to enable lighter touches to redirect posts/discussions.
Nevertheless, itโs possibly the best option fitting the format available at the moment given the rest, but if Lemmy and federation doesnโt suit you you might check out Tildes or Discuit. Although be advised: Tildes remains invite only for now.
Honestly I think any general/casual discussion community would welcome posts about those subjects as well, which there are a number of across Lemmy sites to check out.
Excuse some software ramblings and rants, but been making a number of changes and trying some experiments as of late and feel like talking about them some here.
First off, Telegram got largely yeeted a few weeks back. The app is still on my phone and I haven't deleted my account. But it's probably coming. The company's flirtations with ways to make money have long been a little concerning. The CEO really tipping his hand with a Tucker Carlson interview broke me.
So in light of that, let folks know I'd rather pivot to other ways to chat. There's no perfect replacement, but basically iMessage, Discord, and Signal are all gonna take over. With a preference for the first two but the later still a strong option.
I've also been flirting with Lemmy and Kbin as Reddit replacements, as Reddit did a great job making me loathe them as a company. Alas, both of them suck. Also peeked to see and Narhwal 2 is a $4 a month sub. To just get a decent UI. ๐คฃ
Five days ago I made this magazine on Kbin social but wanted to test out mbin so I decided to make it here as well. I look forward to seeing how this magazine turns out....
I've created accounts on lemmy, reddthat, and here last summer (I have problems accessing Bee Haw, though), though I haven't been active much until perhaps now as my reddit account of the same name has been suspended the 4th time, and they also got a few of my alts (I wasn't ban evading, gaming points or the like). I've probably made most of my comments on kbin.
Yeah, I can see your history on pc. On mobile though, it insists youโve never made any comments before this post. Probably kbin has some different api or something.
You mean Nijimiss? I'm running the searches for that within Kbin Social, and not the opposite, and tinkering with the VPN, Kbin doesn't seem to have problems with EU IPs (isn't it from Poland? I have the impression I read something on that previously).
I wanted to post this here since I want to help as much as I can in my own way to people coming here for the first time. I hope it is useful and helpful! I tried to assume low knowledge with the Fediverse in my responses which I collected here from a different post and assembled into a single article....
Currently, on the main instance, people have created 40191 accounts (+214 marked as deleted). I don't know how many are active because I don't monitor it, but once again, I greet all of you here :) In recent days, the traffic on the website has been overwhelming. It's definitely too much for the basic docker-compose setup,...
Iโm looking for a place to upload some video. By now iโve found playeur.com and rumble but i would love to hear what you guys are using. Thanks in advance.
Peertube is the Fediverse equivalent of YouTube, the Fediverse being what Lemmy (where you are), Kbin (where I am) etc. are also a part of.
As far as I'm aware, it's a matter of finding an instance you resonate with, create an account and share away.
Do bear in mind that since it's the Fediverse, Peertube instances aren't usually backed by a large organisation with bags of cash, so if you can afford to donate to your instance, at least consider doing so.
I'd also recommend not using Peertube as a be-all-end-all storage for your videos. Always keep a copy for yourself. People do this with YouTube and they shouldn't unless they're OK with suddenly and forever losing that content at some unspecified future date. The same can happen with PeerTube, but the reasons are likely to be different (instance closing rather than unexpected account deletion).
Corporation-backed video hosts include: Twitch, Dailymotion and Vimeo. You could probably also host on Facebook. While these are options, they might make you feel as unclean as I did typing that out.
I discovered yesterday evening that Lemmy.ml is blocking all inbound ActivityPub requests from /kbin instances. Specifically, a 403 'access denied' is returned when the user agent contains "kbinBot" anywhere in the string. This has been causing a cascade of failures with federation for many server owners, flooding the message...
@tuneintodetuned Y ya que estamos he seguido probando mรกs peculiaridades de #Kbin y #Lemmy a raรญz de esto. Gracias, @Badluck@Detuned que sin ti no lo habrรญa comprobado antes!
@Badluck Prefiero #Kbin ahora mismo. @tuneintodetuned
Maybe not such a shitpost but the mere existence of things like Lemmy and kBin is comforting, especially after living through the enshittification of Reddit.
I'm looking at getting kbin installed locally so I can make some UI / UX changes, but it's a different tech stack than I'm used to. Anyone here gotten it to run locally and can offer any advice on the difficulty involved?...
