Yeah, discourse feels more natural and less encumbered by obscure algorithms and SEO. Not having a karma score to protect helps a lot too. No one here cares about your karma which encourages echo chambers of parroted jokes and approved opinions. FAANG/SV controlled platforms are constantly sanitized for advertisers and in the case of YouTube, you have AI-assisted auto-censoring and comment shadowbanning so I constantly feel there like walking on eggshells. I remember this wasn't the case back in 2014, it's all caused by recent antifeatures introduced later on into the platform.
By contrast, here in Fedi you have no obscure algorithms nor shadowbans and you constantly interact with people from different instances which can have vastly different points of view and ethos than yours so you naturally get to see a genuine, diverse and vibrant space of conversations.
As for astroturfing and bots, these seem like things that come naturally to massive platforms once they reach the mainstream. To be honest this place feels a little vulnerable to these if moderation can't catch up. Luckily lemmy.world's owner is a trusted party with experience running Fediverse instances.

Du hast Recht, meine Timeline ist hier auch viel positiver als bei Reddit. War mir noch nicht bewusst aufgefallen, gefällt mir jetzt, wo ich es merke, aber.
As a leftist who identifies most strongly and is a member of the NDP, here's my take on what the party needs to do to get better:
Dump Jagmeet Singh. His leadership has become increasingly parrot-like, he regurgitates speaking points without creating shadow policy to back up his words.
Create progressive shadow policies and actually show the public. Explain it in multimedia in open, transparent ways like animated videos on YouTube. (Think like Kurzgesagt style simplicity.)
It’s deeply concerning that UK unions have begun to parrot Stop the War’s talking points regarding the invasion of Ukraine.
Of course, unions have always been priority targets for far left and far right agitators, but Stop the War is a known, Kremlin-linked organisation pushing for the secession of the UK from NATO and the appeasement of Russia.
Given their sway within the Labour Party, I’m not sure on the best way to contain this.
"Modern American conservativism was always a fascist operation. Things didn’t suddenly change in 2015 with the rise of Trump. Trump, if anything, simply watched Fox News and parroted conservativism’s fascist impulses right back to it.
Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. made this clear in 1964 as conservatism took over the lead of the Republican Party with the choice of Sen. Barry Goldwater as its presidential candidate."
After a week of listening to tech news, the bluesky coverage is perturbing.
Almost every big of coverage starts with something like "Bluesky is an open decentralized social network, kinda like Mastodon" - and then goes on to describe the centralized, invite-only, 50k user, semi-broken pop-up party of the sort that's periodically condensed out of internet ether over the decades.
Like, okay, sure that sounds like fun. But not really a new concept in terms of the current implementation? Doesn't really seem like the protocol is paying off yet?
The Vergecast sounded at least somewhat snarky about it, but it seems like a lot of other tech journalists are caught up in the fun and parroting the conceptual hype? Ugh.
How serious are the right wing extremists? I came across this image on a right wing site. This is the same image of Washington featured when the American Nazis gathered at Madison Square Garden for a mass rally on February 20, 1939.
@WillRobinson I mean do you want me to pull up the statistics on right wing militias and some of the numerous calls to violence? It’s super prevalent regionally, has become increasingly violent over the past decade, and has some institutional support as we see with the independent elector theory, state governments parroting talking points, and federally is taking over the Conservative Party (think of the republicans that held out on voting for McCarthy, that’s was a conflict between neoliberal republicans versus the newer more radical populist republicans).

Wie könnt ihr so ohne Reddit zurecht?
Mir gefällt's hier und ich hoffe, dass die Communities doch wieder einspielen. Bin sogar motiviert Mastodon noch mal eine Chance zu geben.

Why do I feel like so many people here support the USSR and the CCP?...
