@kgoetz @boud @paulcox @Philsturgeon What changed was that the Libs reneged on their election promises making them immediately wildly unpopular. The idea of the referendum was to give parties like them proportionally more say which was suddenly and sharply much less appealing than before. The Tories knew this of course and pressed for the referendum sooner rather than later before they became the hate object again. Politically the Libs have always been rank incompetent.

@jackyan Showerthoughts: I think often about how bad xml is and http too. If you rendered the entire page, you wouldn't be able to block ads - like its just one big image right? Remember the image masks where you'd define hotspots to click back in the day? rust, webassembly, shenaningans, feels a bit like reinventing flash from first principles... aaaanyway...

@rbreich Why do we pretend that employees pay tax anyway? It never hits your bank account. I don't think the rate is the problem. It is that most big companies -and not just people like Donald Trump- get to dodge it for decades and don't pay a fraction. If you had a reasonable flat non-deductible rate on gross it would be fairer. Also vary by category e.g. tax fossil fuels out of existence instead of checks notes subsidizing them wtf.

@jackyan Sadly people don't vote Libs in parliamentary elections in UK. Even though they were the only anti-Brexit party, they still garner a fraction of the vote which means nowhere in FPP system. They are perceived as a wasted vote, weak, prevaricating, fuddy old sandal and socks brigade. They do nothing to dispel this. The electorate won't forget being stabbed in the back by them either.

@jackyan Apart from reneging on their promises, politically they are also the only party to stay put ideologically, more or less in the centre. Everyone else swung to the right, Labour passed them and became more right wing than them which was weird af. Half of Labour and half of the Tory candidates are basically where the Libs are but they like power too much so they keep fascist bedfellows.
