Tom Carter's piece here, "A decade of failing to persuade the New York Times to pay attention to Leonard Leo," is important. It details his failed attempts to get New York Times to track Leonard Leo and his (and his cronies') outsized influence on the federal government for years now.

As he notes, NY Times and other corporate media outlets have typically refused to deal with this story, even as Leo packs the Supreme Court.

Isn't it … odd … that Trump just "happened" to meet an adoring devotee at Chick-Fil-A in Atlanta, a Black woman who hugged him, proving that Black people are just head over heels in love with Trump –

And she turns out to be an employee of the Georgia GOP?

All staged to create viral videos and all deeply insulting to African American voters, with the implication that they can be easily deceived and manipulated.

As Richard Fowler stated on Fox News in response to Trump and Mike Johnson's press conference alleging widespread illegal voting in federal elections,

"Over and over and over again, people keep saying there's 'voter fraud,' and there's no evidence of voter fraud. There's no evidence of non-citizens voting in federal elections. And until they prove that, this press conference to me was null and void."

As Philip Bump notes, a majority of Americans support stricter gun laws and the right of women to access abortion. Despite this, a minority of Americans are allowed to block both gun control and the right to abortion through “manifested minority power.” Republican policies are all about enshrining minority control of the majority and locking this control in for as long as possible in the future.

"When RNC co-chair and Trump daughter-in-law Lara Trump blasted out a robocall last week claiming 'massive fraud' in the 2020 election, it was a continuation of one of the great long cons in history. Four years and counting …

The Big Lie is a criminal conspiracy, a long con, a grift, and essentially a Trump family business opportunity."

@lin11c I ask that, too. I think many of us – and many of our "guardrail" institutions – are just choosing to throw up our hands in response, because the corruption and grift are so bold and seem increasingly normalized by our corporate media and also by our judiciary.

"We stand at a stark divide in the fight to protect the reproductive liberty of women. One candidate, Joe Biden, promises to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade if he is given a majority in both chambers of Congress. The other, Donald Trump, is okay with a total ban on abortion and jailing doctors as long as gerrymandered state legislators pass a law banning abortion."

“Name a force or impulse that threatens the stability of the American political system – distrust in the fairness of elections, conspiracy theorizing, the embrace of authoritarianism – and it is always more prevalent among rural Whites than among those living elsewhere."

"For many years, it was assumed that successful racial appeals had to be offered subtly, to provide voters a kind of internal plausible deniability, so that they could tell themselves they weren't being racist when they responded to such appeals. By the time 2016 came around, this was no longer true. White identity had become important enough that Trump could succeed by wearing his bigotry on his sleeve.”

“Even the common, and perfectly accurate, criticism that Trump doesn't practice what he preaches likely resonates in rural areas, where you often find a strong moral code that is regularly violated by many of the people who live there."

"The fact that rural areas have plenty of infidelity and teen parenthood (which occurs at significantly higher rates among rural Americans than city dwellers) doesn't necessarily make people reject traditional family values; it can make them cling to those values all the more fervently, as they consider them under constant, visible threat.”

~ Ibid.

“Even if Trump fails in 2024 and becomes nothing more than the laughable two-bit grifter he always has been at heart, his effect on the politics of rural America will be felt for a generation, if not more. He showed every Republican what rural Whites, and the GOP base more broadly, really want and how to give it to them."

"The result is a politics saturated in bitterness and bile, and a party whose most loyal voters don't expect their leaders to offer them anything but the ugliest kind of emotional satisfaction.
