Review for Pengo on game Gear.
Sega Force 4 - April 1992 (UK)
I have to add that I feel they are being a bit too harsh on Pengo here.
Although I understand since the game was a decade old by the time it released on Game Gear.
I loved it in the arcade and it was actually my first GG game. 😊
I love the game so much that I have the Japanese MD, Xbox 360 and Switch versions as well.
haha, that looks great!
I have to put it on my PSP one of these days as I usually don't dabble with emulators.
Thinking back, it astounds me that besides the Atari and C64, Pengo never really got released on any of the 8 or 16 bit consoles besides the Game Gear...
Well, there was Pepenga Pengo in Japan on Mega Drive, which is super expensive nowadays, but it's very different from the original. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHBrEjjIbMY
Well since I have Pengo on my mind now, I started watching the history of this series and found out that the arcade original was actually released on SEGA Saturn in the Sega Ages: Memorial Selection, Vol. 1, which I actually have but had completely forgotten about!
And I just have to repeat myself, but I'm in awe of all the incredible artwork in this magazine series.
Just look at that gorgeous Splatterhouse piece right here!
I have a hard time wrapping my head around how the artist was able to create so many pieces each and every month for Sega Force as well as N-Force!
@OutofPrintArchive I always loved this game more than other Sonic games for some reason. I think comparisons to Mario Kart are a bit unfair--it plays more like Outrun or Rar Racer. It's also a technical achievement when you consider the Game Gear is basically just a Master System.
I have a monkey paw wish where they add GG and SMS games to Switch Online, and hack online multiplayer into Drift 2!
Previews for Griffin and GG Aleste on Game Gear from Sega Force 3 - March 1992 (UK)
Remember that you can get GG Aleste on the Aleste Collection for PS4 and Switch, but only in Japan.
It includes GG Aleste 1 and 2 as well as Aleste 1 and 2 on Master System and the brand new and brilliant GG Aleste 3 by the masters at M2.
@yesterzine
Yeah, this was a bit of a rough one.
But is issue 4 it's back to having tons of incredible games.
It's really fascinating to see how game droughts from back in the early 90's are preserved in these magazines.
I still remember for example, how it felt early on in the Super Nintendo days after launch.
Very slim picking for the next 3 months or so while I waited for the next releases to finally arrive.
When they did, it opened up the floodgates. 😅
Took a quick picture of the Sega Force magazines that just arrived.
All 19 issues are here and in good shape.
As well as the few CVG issues I was missing from the run that I'm working on. Mainly the Freeplay supplement that was missing in issue 194 as well as issue 154 that I didn't have.
I'll start scanning the first issue of Sega Force later tonight. 😊
