nice garnets in this Moine amphibolite near Uisken this morning. Rock too steep for poor Spud, so he had to just view from the beach...

from yesterday.... Spud has found some garnet-tastic Moine metabasic tuffs(?) or maybe an intrusion. Each knobbly bit is a large garnet crystal, but alas they are never show external crystal faces, and are always stuffed with gazillions of quartz inclusions. Still, lovely to see! 😊

inclusions in garnets in metamorphic rocks record structural information that has been obliterated in the rest of the rock. The processes that create snowball are illuminated by the quartz inclusions!

A fantastic cluster of transparent gemmy honey colored grossular garnet (Ca3Al2(SiO4)3 ) var Hessionite. From the famous Jeffrey Mine, Val-des-Sources, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Québec, Canada. The Jeffrey Mine is a now-closed former open-pit asbestos mine. Specimen Size: 3 cm x 2 cm x 1 cm.
