@alternativenation a friend of mine introduced me to #Portishead when they were still active, and it was very different to music either of us usually listened to at that time. I still really like them. https://youtu.be/8T0cRt8efsQ
I still associate the song Wandering Star with the science fiction show Babylon 5 😄
My mind just made a connection there somehow and now I'm stuck with it.
#GreatAlbums1990s - #MassiveAttack - #Protection (1994). Although only partially a rap album, Tricky’s Bristol drawl is a unifying factor in this seamless hybrid of hip hop, electronica and pop. Tracey Thorn’s croon, on the title track and “Better Things,” reinforced the disc’s crossover appeal, as Massive’s postmodern soul on Blue Lines grows deeper and darker on this sensual, often brooding tour-de-force. Portishead’s #Dummy was its only true rival. #Albums, #Reviews, #Rap, #GreatPopAlbums
#GreatAlbums1990s - #MassiveAttack - #BlueLines (1991). The idea of warming-up electronica with classic soul wasn’t unprecedented, but Massive’s ingenious stew – peppered with mumbled rap for a streetwise vibe – laid the foundation for much of what happened in 90s pop outside of guitar rock. “Safe from Harm,” “Be Thankful for What You’ve Got” and “Unfinished Sympathy” are like Motown for the 90s, echoing later in everything from Bjork to Amy Winehouse. #GreatPopAlbums, #Reviews, #TripHop
Heads up: I’m bringing a music listening project that I’ve been working on over to mastodon now. I’ve been calling it “Radio to the Death”.
Basically I wanted to listen to Rolling Stone’s top 500 albums of all time. But also, I’m me, so everything has to be a game of some kind. As such, I took all the albums and made a tournament bracket seeded by order in the original list. I listen to each pair of albums (in one sitting, ideally) and declare a winner. #RadioToTheDeath
