Quick story about a #PDX neighbor. Was walking my dog this morning and passed by a man slumped on top of a bicycle on the ground sleeping. Checked to make sure he was alive; he looked dehydrated. Went back to give him food and water, check on him again. Then PPB rolled up us cuz some other neighbor called the cops on him. He was getting up, said he was ok, didn’t need medical. Cop took off thankfully, seeing he had food and water from me and was alert and able to carry on.
Here’s an idea for everyone to chew on. MAYBE TRY TALKING TO PEOPLE AND HELPING THEM BEFORE YOU CALL THE COPS ON THEM. The guy was trying to sleep, was likely super dehydrated and malnourished. It’s trash day in our hood, and that always brings people around looking thru recycling for cans. Dude was out canning and his body needed rest. #mutualaid#MutualDefense

It’s weird to see the argument in favour of federating with facebook that “if your admin chose to defederate from another server who was working with facebook wouldn’t you be upset that they’d broken your connections to everyone you follow and impacted your timeline?”
Babe, I came here from Mastodon dot lol. That place collapsed over a fucking videogame. I’ve already moved instances due to the same sort of garbage. At least this defederation business is over something that really matters.
And also, I’d say blame is much more on the heads of admins who choose to federate with facebook. Just doing something because other people are doing it is not a good reason to do it!
“ActivityPub is an open technology so it’s fine if Facebook uses it” is a nonsensical take.
“Houses” are also an open technology but it’s very much not ok how landlords and other capitalists use it.
If you believe open standards and open source alone will protect you from the destructive force of capital, then you’re in for a harsh awakening. Or you could listen to all the people who have been harmed by or studied these mechanisms in the past already and learn something before it’s too late.
