I watched the original #Shogun series in the 80s (and read the book) in junior high, leading to enjoying most of #JamesClavell's novels (especially King Rat and Whirlwind) but am wondering what the remake intends to achieve? There is a lot in it to unpack, and I'm not sure what will stay and what will be changed to suit current sensibilities.
I just saw an add for an FX original series. As I was watching it, I said to myself, "Is this a remake of #Shogun? Because there's fertile ground for a remake of Shogun." It's a remake of Shogun.
Shoguns were military dictators in Japan from 1192-1867. Initially appointed by the emperor, they soon became the de facto rulers. The title 'Shogun' was held by the heads of the most powerful warrior clans. The first shogunate, Kamakura, began with Minamoto no Yoritomo. This was followed by the Ashikaga and Tokugawa shogunates. The era ended with Meiji Restoration, restoring emperor's power.
