On this date in 1997, the Detroit Red Wings won their 1st Stanley Cup in 42 years, completing a 4-game sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers with a 2-1 win in Detroit.
Nicklas Lidstrom & Darren McCarty had goals in the win for the Wings and goalie Mike Vernon was named playoff MVP.
On the one hand, I'm sad that the #Canucks have been eliminated from the #StanleyCup playoffs, but I didn't expect them to get past the Stars anyway. The #Oilers are the best chance to bring Lord Stanley's Cup home to #Canada for the first time in 30 years, so #LetsGoOilers!
Are you confused about the Stanley cup (no, not that one) craze? Vox's Alex Abad-Santos attempts to break down this bizarre obsession with a fancy water bottle. "Stanley isn’t really into selling people what they need though," he says. "If it were, one reusable indestructible water bottle with a lifetime warranty should be enough."
We'll return to the same bar near our house that has the game, but this time, I think I'll attempt to listen to the game via #TuneIn while I watch it on a dozen TVs.
Sadly, the #hockey side of the #Fediverse is pretty sparse, so I'll be mainly talking to myself. I'm not sure that the @hockey group is still functioning, so it may be the @TheHockeyWriters and a handful of us fans posting around The Verse.
