From the Douro DOC. The Denominação de origem controlada is the primary category for quality wine in Portugal. The rugged Douro was a demarcated wine region as early as 1756, and is the home of Port. These days, the grapes which are used for Port also end up in red blends such as this wine, as well as in single varietals.
Nose of blackberries, black cherries, blueberries. A luscious deep purple in the glass. Well-defined legs. Palate of black fruit, gravel, leather, baking spice. Chalky medium-plus tannins. Bold, off-dry, medium to full-bodied. Medium acidity. Medium long finish. Had the wine before and after dinner, as it would not have worked.
Not my first Douro red, for sure won’t be my last. Lots of intriguing grapes in Portugal. Might buy again.
