Interesting, California has a pilot program on an effort to charge drivers by the number of miles you drive, instead of through gas taxes. (to make up for lost revenues to EVs, which do not need gasoline). They are paying $400 in gift cards -- and a gas tax or EV registration fee credit -- for taking part in the pilot. #California #driving #autos #taxes https://caroadcharge.com/media/zehd2y5s/ca-sb-339_public-fact-sheet_final_remediated.pdf

@ai6yr @__josh I also signed up. We need to make sure that people who understand and are concerned about privacy and technology have a voice.

We also need to make sure that there are no impediments to a switch to EVs and getting this right is part of the solution.

8% of streets cause the majority of fatal crashes but does anyone understand that making those streets safe requires getting people out of cars? needs , not flashing lights.

#transportation utility fee as a replacement for the #gasTax is a terribly unpopular idea because we're tired of subsidizing #carSupremacy. Crank up the fucking gas tax until drivers are breaking even, and then ask me about creating a source of funding that will still work when you make people quit driving. 🙄 "Portland Bureau of cart befOre The horse", here. #PBOT #FuckCars

Public transport isn't supposed to make money. It's not even supposed to break even. It's supposed to lose money and to be financed and extended from general taxes because it gives back way more than mere money.

And all the politicians know this because they keep building and maintaining streets for free

@jay_peper In principle, gas taxes should fund road maintenance and construction. However, in the US "in 2011, highway user fees and user taxes made up just 50.4 percent of state and local expenses on roads."

https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/state/gasoline-taxes-and-user-fees-pay-only-half-state-local-road-spending/

I didn't find more up to date figures elsewhere, or a similar estimate for Canadian roads.
