Thanks to the holiday time, work has progressed on my #MiniDiscXL project. All basic functions work well and the code has been cleaned up a lot. Also, I switched out the MO drive for one that is more compatible with #linux. It seems those with a Fujitsu mechanism are the best bet.
Internally, it uses #mpd and each disc has an m3u file that lists the contents called playlist.m3u. This playlist is loaded into mpd each time a disc is inserted.
At one point I wondered what would happen if I insert a disc that has a playlist file of internet streams instead of tracks on the disc. As #mpd is so flexible, it simply plays the streams, as long as there is internet access.
I've purged #mpd from my system and I've been running #cmus for a couple days now. So far I'm quite happy with it. I wrote a little 'currently playing' python script for i3blocks and I have cmus continuously running (and automatically started) in a screen session which I have in a i3wm scratchpad terminal (OFC easily accessible with a hotkey).
I knew ncmpcpp in my bones and the hardest part about this is teaching myself all the keys for controlling and navigating cmus, some of which I don't think make much sense.
I still have some things to figure out, like playlists, adding a random selection of songs, scrobbling, album art/visualizer (not important at all but would be fun), and maybe also http streaming. I believe cmus is going to work out just fine for me, I just have to get the hang of it.
