Thanks to the holiday time, work has progressed on my project. All basic functions work well and the code has been cleaned up a lot. Also, I switched out the MO drive for one that is more compatible with . It seems those with a Fujitsu mechanism are the best bet.

Internally, it uses and each disc has an m3u file that lists the contents called playlist.m3u. This playlist is loaded into mpd each time a disc is inserted.

oshu,

At one point I wondered what would happen if I insert a disc that has a playlist file of internet streams instead of tracks on the disc. As is so flexible, it simply plays the streams, as long as there is internet access.

Accidental internet radio. Neat!

I wonder how many people here use or appliances. My friends and I who work in tech jobs all refuse to let any such things into our home.

I will never buy any appliance that requires an internet connection. I love my simple dumb appliances!

I got a weird idea to make a new "retro" music format a few weeks ago. Taking inspiration from the , I dug around in my spare parts collection and this is what I came up with...

Presenting the prototype!

It's built from a broken cd player, an old gigamo drive, mpd, and a running some custom python code.

More info to follow!

oshu, (edited )

The broken cd player was gutted and fitted with a new 5v psu. The front buttons are wired to the pi's gpio and work as expected. Same for the outputs on the rear which are internally connected to a usb sound card.

The original power cord and switch are retained and work as expected.

A disc is actually a mo disc formated with ext2 containing music in the ogg opus file format.

oshu,

Recording modes are SP (512k opus), LP (256k opus), and SLP (128k opus). FLAC files are also support for playback.

The network cable coming out of the front is for debugging. Next I need to make a black face plate for the drive and a hole in the back of the chassis for the debugging/network cable.

It's been a lot of fun so far!

I do hope this DOES NOT catch on...

UK's biggest pub chain is planning "dynamic pricing" charging 20p a pint more during peak hours

Dynamic pricing when the supply is not dynamic doesn't make much sense.

One of the machine's I've been after for ever was the Apple IIc, probably after seeing it in use on a beach in the film 2010 the year we make contact by Arthur C Clarke.

Well, I managed to get one really cheap. It arrived today & it's in excellent condition.

It's an NTSC machine but with a modern PSU so it works in the UK. Also means the composite output is colour (PAL is mono).

Now I need to learn how to use it

oshu,

@peter
Wonderful!

This was my first computer and I still love it.

The Floppy Emu from Big Mess O Wires is a great modern add on.

If anyone wants these, I'll send them to you for free. I'll even pay the shipping.

This is the risk when you buy an entire secondhand #music store's stock of #cassettes: some of them are going to be #PhilCollins. They're sitting on my orange desk mat, in front of an Apple keyboard.

can an average person use a linux phone?

@linuxphones

I've been reading some articles about mobile Linux and many of them state one must be an "advanced user" or that the software isn't secure. How true is this?

I already use Linux on my laptop, but I'm not a software developer or anything like that. Would I be able to slap a new OS onto an old Android phone and be on my way, or would I run into problems?

@RetroWizzard Thanks for sharing that! But ...I need this now that I know it exists and they are out of stock on everything!
