I've been working on a new community instance for the past few months. It's still a work-in--progress, but is ready for a slow opening.
So, if you feel constrained by the on-topic nature of our Local Timeline here on vis.social, or you don't want to CW your posts that mention AI tech, you might be happier on the new instance: datavis.social
Can you stay here on vis.social and ALSO have an account on datavis.social? Yes!
Did you know that you can make your posts 'unlisted'?
They are still public, and can be boosted, but they don't show up on your community instance's Local Timeline.
By making your off-topic posts 'unlisted' you are showing respect for this community. You are also less likely to be muted or blocked by folks who don't want to see off-topic posts on the Local Timeline.
ps. Please add CW if you are showing alcohol or food.
We've mentioned that our team has been exploring ways folks in our community can help out with moderation with less time-commitment.
Well, with Signal now supporting user names, instead of phone numbers, we are almost ready to move forward.
As we prepare our application form, for potential Drop-In-Mods, we'd like to know what you would ask a potential moderator. What do you think makes a helpful moderator?
Seeing too many of the same boost? Go to your profile setting and select "other". At the top, there is a box to select to limit how quickly you see boosts. You will still see it if someone boosts it tomorrow, but you won't see it six times in a row.
Why do we try to maintain our Local Timeline as on-topic?
There are so many reasons. But one big one is that our Local Timeline is what other folks see when they are checking out if they'd like to join our community or not.
We are a topic-based instance, so when our Local Timeline is all over the place and there's no Data Viz or Art or any Creative process...What are potential community member supposed to make of this?
@kristinHenry Let's try not to (in)advertently censor our queer friends or people who research sensitive topics. Ex.: Dataviz about reproductive health is appropriate imo #visSocialTips
Normally, I would be putting #visSocialTips in posts about what's going on. But I've been distracted by admin-stuff...dealing with spam attacks and so on.
You can help! Check your mentions, and report any spam. Once you see it, you'll know. They're very repetitive, though coming from accounts on various servers.
