Having a Spring Drive one and a Quartz one in my collection already, it is only natural that my 3rd would be a Hi-beats automatic. When I saw the radial snowy dial, the 44GS case and the blue GMT hand, I knew that the SBGJ201 aka “Mt Iwate” was the one. It’s not the first watch that can handle timezones in my collection but definitely the first regular GMT.

My 3rd is secured. I had been looking for one for weeks and stumbled upon an opportunity to get one that meets literally everything I wanted. l will post about it later but if you know that I already own a Spring Drive one and a Quartz one, you can guess where this is going 😉

With how sunny it is right now, it is not too hard to get a lum shot of my Seiko SNK809. Field watches are so easy to read 👌

I've recently gotten into and at the same time. They do tend to be related, but I never expected interest in one to create interest in another.

All that to say, all the cool gears in mechanical watches are awesome. But, I also got a Casio G-SHOCK that syncs with the radio broadcast of the atomic clock every night. Its really fascinating technology, at least to me!

@johnpeden Seiko and Citizen also make those kind of watches in their solar/eco-drive lineups with the “radio-controlled” moniker.

Now that the weather is getting sunny again here, I can show a little something about my Datejust. People tend to think that the cream Buckley dial is just a flat colored dial and they are not wrong. Most of the time it does look uniform. But as soon as you put it in the sunlight, you’ll notice that it has some texture/graininess in the way it reflects strong light. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of that.

😳 I just ordered another model yesterday, in what was probably the worst timed purchase of the year. Now I want this one!!

G-Shock GA-2100MNG is a Japanese manga-inspired watch series with an illustrated hand-drawn style https://www.g-central.com/g-shock-ga-2100mng-is-a-japanese-manga-inspired-watch-series-with-an-illustrated-hand-drawn-style/

@jason Right?? It’s not a great month, as I’ve ordered one, a pen, a Kobo,… Hope they still have them next month.

This is one that grew on me. It's a Parnis Chinese automatic PVC coated

@violinguy it kind of looks a lot like a Cartier Drive

I just bought my 2nd . Will talk about it and explain the choices I made once I actually get my hands on the box. The only thing I will tease is that this reference is very plain and simple, and probably not one I would have considered 3 months ago before I had owned the very fancy SBGA259/Golden Snowflake.

@r_df_ng Grand Seiko is normally a bit over-budget for what I was willing to put for an everyday convenient watch. So I was initially considering something like a smaller quartz Citizen or a Longines VHP. But then I got lucky, was offered a very very good deal for this one and went back to the idea of GS.

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

Comparing the side view of the SBGA259 and SBGP005, unsurprisingly the case of the watch with quartz movement is much slimmer than the one with Spring Drive. But due to titanium instead of steel the bigger case is still lighter.

I came across a Datejust with tapestry dial aka “American Psycho”. I will obviously pass on it as I already own the same 16013 reference but with another dial. I found it funny though 😂 #watches #watchesofmastodon

Probably the 2 watches I wear the most lately. I usually don’t swap midday like a weirdo but I exceptionally did today because having the wrong date on one of them was bothering me 😂

I am not sure why it took me so long to get a proper set of tools for instead of relying on tools for electronics that sometimes did ok sometimes not ok. I don’t plan to do anything touching the movements themselves but it’s certainly going to help for basic maintenance like a battery swap or a bracelet adjustment. I also took the opportunity to grab a 2-slots travel pouch just in case.

Boderry titanium field watch automatic NH35 screw down crown. Available at Boderry.com. Chinese made made well. There's a bronze version too.

@violinguy I actually hesitated to buy this one when I was looking for a field watch because it is cheaper than a Seiko SNK809. But I settled for the latter when I found a deal at about the same price.

I bought some refill of Polywatch. Pretty great to polish and smooth out a few decades worth of scratches on plexiglass surface. It’s night and day on the crystal of the Speedking 👍

I don’t know how controversial my opinion is but I find the modern Air King extremely unappealing. It has lost a lot of the traits from the original looking more like a weird downgraded mix between an Explorer and a Milgauss. And it doesn’t even live up to its name anymore as its design is inspired by a car and has almost nothing to do with airplanes/pilots.

Older Air-King

Ruttalex07,
@Ruttalex07@mastodon.social avatar

@ppn It's true that since the car turned out to be a fiasco, Rolex had to invent something quickly to still be able to sell this model and it's true that the original design was much better. but personally if I was given the choice between a Datjust Oysterstell and an Air-King I would still take the Air-King because quite to choose simplicity I might as well choose the originality of a different watch with its identity and its own stories.

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

@Ruttalex07 In a modern lineup with Oyster perpetual, Datejust, Air-king and Explorer, I would chose any watch except the Air-king. It is literally the only one who has currently zero identity design-wise. I feel like the Air-king has never really managed to find its proper identity. As much as I like vintage Air-king from 50s-70s, it is hard to deny that even then they were very close to late Speedking and Oyster Perpetual. I don't understand what Rolex is trying to achieve at this point.

I got an opportunity to get a Tank for an alright price, but it is the Americaine. Not my favorite. Still thinking about it but will likely pass...

ppn,

@r_df_ng 3971. Americaine feels a bit too large for a tank imo.
