Microsoft really spent $68.7B acquiring Activision only to realize their gaming division is now too big and costly so they’re doing layoffs every quarter 🤦🏾‍♂️

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-05-08/xbox-studio-closures-microsoft-plans-more-cost-cutting-measures-after-layoffs?embedded-checkout=true

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

@carnage4life it’s not a realization, it’s the plan all along. Microsoft spent money to kill competition and acquire their IPs. They couldn’t care less about the people working at the studios.

@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

#Apple's new #iPad lineup is getting very stale and confusing. They are having a hard time justifying meaningful names and features behind the spec bump from M4 vs M2, nobody likely understands what happened to M3 in iPads, and the Pencil Pro can be so easily mistaken for a Pencil 2 or a Pencil USB-C. The pairing of compatible iPad/Pencil is especially such a big mess that they might as well bundle them together at this point to avoid trouble.

Mike Ybarra’s “Won’t someone think of the executives’ feelings” in defense of Phil Spencer in the wake of the massive layoffs at the studios that #Microsoft recently acquired is hilariously tone deaf. Pretty much a reflection of how cowardly and incompetent his short leadership at #Blizzard was https://www.eurogamer.net/former-blizzard-boss-mike-ybarra-defends-xboxs-phil-spencer-following-arkane-austin-tango-gameworks-closures

Truly nuts that these are the last two tweets from a game studio that Microsoft just shut down.

Read from bottom to top.

@carnage4life @frew Microsoft literally said 8 months ago that they were happy with Hi-Fi Rush’s success and planned to invest in the company. It’s not a matter of profit. Their brain-dead corporate speech about IP consolidation is all about not making ENOUGH profit under the silly and unrealistic assumption that everything must be Call of Duty-level of profit.

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

@frew @carnage4life “it’s also been a tough 8 months” and whose fault is that? Who are the ones in charge and supposedly responsible for it? Why are they not impacted at all? Did you go to the same school of tone-deaf public statements as Mike Ybarra? https://mastodon.online/@ppn/112406490095250937

I just bought my 2nd . Will talk about it and explain the choices I made once I actually get my hands on the box. The only thing I will tease is that this reference is very plain and simple, and probably not one I would have considered 3 months ago before I had owned the very fancy SBGA259/Golden Snowflake.

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

Reference is SBGP005. I was looking for a good everyday watch. I had 3 criteria:

  • can work both in casual and formal if needed, 44GS case and incredible finish are classy but sunburst dial with no extra pattern is relatively simple for a
  • blue dial, blue was the one glaringly missing color in my collection so far
  • convenience, date is a must and 9F85 quartz rated at +-10s/year means that I don’t have to babysit it, battery swap after 3 years is trivial

@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

The #GrandSeiko SBGP005 has basically taken the place of both my SBGA259 which I find a bit too fancy for everyday and my #Citizen E650 S086728 which I don’t wear often anymore because it’s too heavy, too big (42.5mm) and a bit too complicated. The SBGP005 is 40.5mm, has one date complication and is steel instead of titanium so it is definitely heavier than SBGA259 but still nowhere near as heavy as the massive Citizen. #watches #watchesofmastodon

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

@r_df_ng Grand Seiko is normally a bit over-budget for what I was willing to put for an everyday convenient watch. So I was initially considering something like a smaller quartz Citizen or a Longines VHP. But then I got lucky, was offered a very very good deal for this one and went back to the idea of GS.

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

Comparing the side view of the SBGA259 and SBGP005, unsurprisingly the case of the watch with quartz movement is much slimmer than the one with Spring Drive. But due to titanium instead of steel the bigger case is still lighter.

"Is it good for the Jews?" That has been a question long asked by Jewish Americans, especially immigrants and those of the second generation, scarred by memories of the Holocaust, when assessing the policies of the US government and the pledges of political candidates. Here are my thoughts on the subject. https://open.substack.com/pub/newsguy/p/jewish-voters-could-sway-us-presidential?r=1g77q&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

I came across a Datejust with tapestry dial aka “American Psycho”. I will obviously pass on it as I already own the same 16013 reference but with another dial. I found it funny though 😂 #watches #watchesofmastodon

Probably the 2 watches I wear the most lately. I usually don’t swap midday like a weirdo but I exceptionally did today because having the wrong date on one of them was bothering me 😂

Google went from you have to be in Mountain View at least three days a week to do this job to you can do it from India and Mexico in less than a year.

@cford @manchicken @carnage4life well we and Google’s executives are going to find out in a few months why one is paid more than the other and why some core stuff shouldn’t be offshored. I hope you are ready for some randomly catastrophic broken updates in your favorite Google products/services.

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

@carnage4life @manchicken @cford I think Chris and you slightly misread what I mean. I come from one of the countries where a lot of tech companies usually off-shore their devs and engineers and saw the shoddy local formation outside of reputable schools. In a world where remote work is still not the norm, most of the talented ones have already tried to emigrate either to study or to work. Executives are going to get “exactly” what they paid for.

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

@manchicken @cford @carnage4life from my first-hand experience I have not seen a single company I work for do the right thing. Executives all went for cheap order-takers from consulting companies that do a horrible job of hiring the right profil and giving them the adequate formation. Also often underestimating language barrier and time zones. After a year or 2 of things going off the rail, they are quick to give up and blame anyone but themselves.

I am not sure why it took me so long to get a proper set of tools for #watches instead of relying on tools for electronics that sometimes did ok sometimes not ok. I don’t plan to do anything touching the movements themselves but it’s certainly going to help for basic maintenance like a battery swap or a bracelet adjustment. I also took the opportunity to grab a 2-slots travel pouch just in case. #watchesofmastodon

Boderry titanium field watch automatic NH35 screw down crown. Available at Boderry.com. Chinese made made well. There's a bronze version too.

@violinguy I actually hesitated to buy this one when I was looking for a field watch because it is cheaper than a Seiko SNK809. But I settled for the latter when I found a deal at about the same price.

I don’t know how controversial my opinion is but I find the modern Air King extremely unappealing. It has lost a lot of the traits from the original looking more like a weird downgraded mix between an Explorer and a Milgauss. And it doesn’t even live up to its name anymore as its design is inspired by a car and has almost nothing to do with airplanes/pilots.

Older Air-King

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

@Ruttalex07 I have seen it IRL and I still disagree that it is a simple dial. It's very busy with a clumsy amount of "5" markers. When you put it side by side with an Explorer that has just 3/6/9, it honestly looks like a messy version of it. Almost nothing in the modern Air-king makes sense. It is not even related to airplane/pilot anymore since it is designed after a car.

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

@Ruttalex07 In a modern lineup with Oyster perpetual, Datejust, Air-king and Explorer, I would chose any watch except the Air-king. It is literally the only one who has currently zero identity design-wise. I feel like the Air-king has never really managed to find its proper identity. As much as I like vintage Air-king from 50s-70s, it is hard to deny that even then they were very close to late Speedking and Oyster Perpetual. I don't understand what Rolex is trying to achieve at this point.
