For a basic setup you can setup a different DNS provider (public) and get more privacy, security (DoH for example) and even ad-blocking.
If you want to take it one step further and decide which list of sites to block / allow, separate per users and so on, having a private DNS service is a good idea.
I do host an Adguard Home docker image in a free VPS and connect to it with all my devices via Wireguard split tunnel (so only DNS queries are tunneled), and with the correct setup it has almost zero maintenance.
Like for example, how someone thinks because you work in IT you can fix their TV, or how if you're into music you must be able to play any random instrument....
Not infuriating but intriguing, when I worked in safety car crashes a lot of people asked me if I was inside the car during the crashes... Never thought that would be the first thing coming up to mind to people but it did happen a lot.
