1rre,

no, it’s the Goblin and anyone who disagrees is going to get funny looks

Same with the “Elizabeth line”, it’s too many syllables so the most people can stretch to is “Lizzie Line”, “Platty Tube” or “Crossrail”

1rre,

I mean if you go back 300 years, but then if you go back 1000-1300 then most of England & Scotland starts to look pretty German (Anglo-Saxons, Norse), with England getting significant French & Scandinavian (Norman = French Norse) influence after and tenuously Austrian (Celts) before that… The native British people were completely wiped out at least twice before that, so frankly all sorts of European nations could have a claim if Putin rules applied

Post-Brexit watchdog ‘ready’ to investigate flood of cheaper Chinese electric cars (www.theguardian.com)

Oliver Griffiths, the chief executive of the UK’s Trade Remedies Authority (TRA), which advises the government on trade defence, said it was keeping lines of communication open with ministers and had been in close contact with the car industry. “We’ll be ready to go if anyone does come to us,” he told the Guardian in an...

1rre,

You said it in your first line… They’re selling them at a loss to try and dominate the market.

Even if the government only think it’s only anti-competitive when foreign companies do it, the truth is it’s anti-competitive as fuck regardless… I’d much rather have both local and international producers producing things at a reasonable price and fair profit level than losing a bunch of money to dominate the market then taking huge profits later on but you do you I guess.

If it were me I’d also be wanting to know how many slave labourers are getting poisoned by toxic fumes to produce them, as while China is great in some respects, the work environment and culture is undeniably Victorian workhouse level.

1rre,

Anticompetitive practices don’t exclusively crush existing competition though? It’s even more prevelant in high start up cost industries that the anticompetitive practices are just shutting out competition before they even enter the market.

If you could sell EVs and break even at maybe 15k and someone else is already selling at a loss for 11k, you’d be wasting your time and money even starting R&D on one…

1rre,

Qwant actually have their own indexer, but even then I feel like Microsoft can push their own products as they want given you are free to ignore it… It’s not like there’s no alternative browsers, search engine indices or operating systems, and loads of other products are built off shared technology without it being an issue that it’s closed off generally

1rre,

I think Baidu, Qwant, Mojeek & Brave all use fully independent indices, but there are likely more. This is excliding eg. Kagi who use a combination of their own and other indices.

Tomatoes were in Europe way before any “Italies” were ever invented though

When tomatoes came over all they had were the Pope, Spanish (Aragonese)/French vassals and a memory of the Roman Empire

1rre,

Bro look up Italy they invented it in like 1800

1rre,

Intelligence is just knowing things and being able to process things, so in theory knowing about religion would be intelligence, however in religion knowing the significance of things is much more important, so it should really be wisdom…

Low intelligence may mean you follow blindly, but ask the average religious person the reasoning for The Great Schism and they’ll probably pull a blank. Ask an irreligious trivia expert and they’ll probably be able to tell you about how it was a disagreement over some traditions and the powers of the pope and who it should be which resulted in Christianity splitting in two in the 11th century, but it would take wisdom to know why it was significant, and why Catholics/Orthodox have historically disliked each other less than either/Muslims, along with a bunch of other useful contextual information which is lost when regurgitating facts

1rre,

Children’s TV shows are a good way to get started though

1rre,

I had to call the electricity company to resolve a fucking clusterfuck of their making the other day (long story short my electricity meter is faulty), and after 3-4 calls I got to someone who said “jesus christ” after I explained my situation and how they’d made it worse trying to resolve it…

She didn’t fix it, it’s still not fully fixed after a further 4 days including 29 hours without power, but gee did I feel like I was speaking to a fellow human who was trying to help in that conversation above all others I had with them

1rre,

I mean that situation describes almost any student in higher education, along with people in long term relationships who are yet to move in together - frankly those two cases more than likely make up the majority of people with two homes

1rre,

If you’re a germaphobe then surely you should know that 100% salt is enough to yeet literally any microorganism to the back of beyond; in fact anything over 30% is

That lamp is more hygienic than your dinner plate, more than the inside of any food package and infinitely more than your hands even after you’ve just washed them

1rre,

Yeah agreed that while you’re more than likely not gonna get sick from it unless you have an allergic reaction of some sort, it’s still probably dusty as those things are a nightmare to clean and so not a pleasant lick

1rre,

Ya think?

I’m lucky enough to be reasonably well off, and seeing the price of gas and electricity I’ve had to cut back elsewhere, take showers at work etc. to keep the same amount of savings, paying mortgage etc.

Imagining not having nearly as much to cut back on, no showers at work, can’t cycle to work and more isn’t hard, as it’s obviously just such a shit situation and yet those in power at Westminster seem completely oblivious to it

1rre,

I’m only getting into semantics because you are - that statement is singular and definite, therefore it can only be taken to have one of two meanings:

A) a given straight man is selected at the start, and once he is voted out it ends.

B) it ends once the final straight man is voted out, as at that point he would be the straight man. This can never occur as he would win by being the only one remaining, so there would be no vote for him to vote himself out.

If they’re all straight without a single selection at the start, then there is not a definite straight man, and even if there is one selected at the start there’s only a 1/12 chance he gets voted out first.

Ukrainians who have moved to the UK have highlighted the lack of dentists as among the most astonishing aspects of British life (www.theguardian.com)

One woman in her 30s, Boyka, told the researchers: “We don’t have a dentist. It’s crazy. For us, it’s, like, impossible! In Ukraine the dentist industry is huge, you know, everywhere, and because it’s everywhere you just go and it’s like £10, £8, and you can clean it, whiten it like [a] Hollywood smile!...

1rre,

What, genociding the Irish and banning any form of fun by claiming enjoyment is sinful?

Sounds like a perfect swap for slightly more availability of dentists /s

1rre,

No, but people need to send and receive next day 6 times a week

1rre,

Unironically though people asking questions, then further explanation, then posting when they figure it out is pretty optimal compared to above average documentation

Xenophobia is to racism what homophobia is to ... ?

Is there a word that means “a hatred of gay people”, rather than “a fear of or aversion to gay people”? Surely there are people who simply hate homosexuality without necessarily fearing it, and vice versa. Someone who hates homosexuality should probably be condemned for their unreasonable and hateful prejudices, but...

1rre,

Every European: “but my hatred of the French is prefectly rational, does that mean it’s not xenophobia?”

1rre, (edited )

I hoped it’d be read as sarcasm

It’s not a serious hatred, but most major/Western European nations (at least Germany, UK, Spain, Italy and probably France themselves) have at least a friendly rivalry with the French despite being on friendly terms either since 1945 or even longer, with France having been fairly positive for Europe since at least the 80s, so it’s incredibly hard to justify that the “hatred” of them is rational

Although the Italians may have twisted it into a surprisingly valid case, just ask about how almost all famous French food is just Italian recipes with a French name and they will be incredibly convincing even if it may not be objective fact

1rre,

I don’t think I implied otherwise?

The guy I was responding to said C4 or D1, but strong, implying they were similar

C4 is strong with a splash of milk, D1 is incredibly weak with no milk so it seems as though they preferred C4 and not D1

1rre,

Down is next because it’s a list of songs with the first song at the top and the last at the bottom.

Frankly it’s the orientation that makes the most sense when you consider it given most people will be listening from a streaming service, but back when CDs were a thing the songs weren’t considered a list but tracks numbered from 1 to n. The up button incremented the track number and so it made sense for up to be next.

Going even further to tapes, fast forward and rewind literally moved the tape left to right/right to left, and so it made sense for them to be right and left respectively, however now it makes less sense other than being what older people are used to

1rre,

It’s not scrolling though - using the arrow keys on a keyboard or d-pad on a controller you’d use up to go up and down to go down when navigating documents, menus etc. As far as I’m aware unlike when you’re moving a viewport either by scrolling or in games there’s no debate when it comes to moving a caret.

And as you said, “having grown up in the tape era”. Just because it was logical for that application and so is logical to you doesn’t mean it’s still logical - people who grew up with record players could just as easily argue for two spinning knobs as you’re moving a potentiometer to increase/decrease the volume, and spinning the record forward/back; having grown up in the CD era I had both of them being up/down or left/right as the buttons were either beneath or either side of the slot/hatch most of the time, same with tv remotes having both as up/down, and given there was no standard then I don’t think either one “just makes sense”
