5.25" vs 5.5" floppy disks.

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.

AngryAnt,

@juandesant @tj @NanoRaptor 8.13" were a mistake though and we are all still paying for it.

AngryAnt,

@phranck @NanoRaptor International Machine Bosses launched them as part of project Deep Teal. Unfortunately they never really took off outside of public libraries and horse tracks.

As per usual, the porn industry preferring 5.25 for distribution of their steamy novels settled that format war as well.

@arzi @djlink That's a pretty long conversation I'm not really up for, but suffice to say I don't fully agree :)

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink That's very true for a value of "most" inside lots of proffessions, but not inside public/gov office work, education, and more.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@arzi @djlink Certainly - the majority of systems I'm seeing are cloud one way or the other. Which is a strong argument for being flexible on the OS hosting the browser connecting to those services.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink Fingers crossed MS sticks to their guns. It would be an extremely effective catalyst for purging Windows from public & commercial systems accross EU countries.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@neilhenning @dougbinks @aras I was visiting an open zoo here where you drive around the park and from the road observe the animals roaming. Sometimes they block the road, so you wait.

Except this one genius who thought it brilliant to exit his vehicle when buffalo were blocking, and then go try to push a calf out of the way...

He survived, so hopefully he took the right lesson and shares it with people around him.

I tried as a daily driver. It's a bit too adventurous for me yet. I'm going to keep playing with it in a VM. will remain for now.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@electrona Ah yea that specifically will unfortunately have to happen on device.

I would recommend aiming for having your first on-device build not do anything nvidia at all - so you have an established base which will just boot & run - without GPU acceleration. Then you can do your nvidia config iterations based on that - able to return to this base build when a test of yours doesn't boot properly.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@electrona Working with it in a VM first, taking your time to expore and tweak, is really nice - worked well for me as an entry as well.

AngryAnt,

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@LexGear @playmedusa I obv. can not speak for Aras, but it would seem this is something he decided he wanted to spend his Unity monies on.

As an aside, he's mentioned he doesn't want the hazzle of setting up and operating an entity to receive funds, pay expenses, and log taxes. That one I can certainly relate to.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@playmedusa @LexGear Not on gamedev.place - a means of contributing has been requested and it was declined. If that changes, it'll be announced.

3b7d2d2c-3732-41db-a678-8bc4aeaf9155 as a secret for auth tokens? 😱
This looks a lot like a bad security practice to me, especially when RFC4122 says:

"Do not assume that UUIDs are hard to guess; they should not be used as security capabilities (identifiers whose mere possession grants access), for example. A predictable random number source will exacerbate the situation."

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eliasp @pid_eins Also worth noting you can share the pve RNG with guests in order to further deepen your randomness - assuming those guests don't boot and behave fully deterministically.

quentinsf, to NixOS
@quentinsf@mastodon.me.uk avatar

If you're already familiar with Linux, then is great, and all you need is a good degree in computer science to be able to write the configuration files. If you have one of those, you can learn it in about six months. If you haven't? Well, then it'll be about three years and six months.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@quentinsf Being able to reapply as much know-how as possible is most definitely the preferred learning experience.

I don't really see how that angle is all that possible in the specific scenario though. Mostly it just looks like yet another docs challenge: making it aboundantly clear that NixOS is a very different Linux experience.

IMO my primary advantage was not computer science, but that I came in with the clear mindset that I was about to learn something very different.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@quentinsf I don't actually think the Linux experience is a positive factor in that setup.

I came in from macOS, but with the computer science, and took to NixOS quite quickly. Conversely I've seen many people bounce off it because they expected to be able to more directly apply their Linux know-how and got frustrated.

My wife bought this fancy light for our living room thinking we would just be able to put our usual brand of smart bulb inside only to find it came with an LED bar. Luckily it came with a dimmer box in the ceiling mount so I was able to bodge a Shelly Dimmer inside and hook it up to . Kudos for Shelly for allowing this to be done without additional apps or cloud services! I wish all smart home companies could be like this!

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@andy_warb There really are a ton of companies out there offering great Zigbee products with flexibility like that. It's just that the ones with the largest marketing budgets tend not to.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@andy_warb It is massively frustrating. When I can't immediately find what I need in my usual local market, my trick is to start from the compatibility list of random Zigbee projects / antennas.

I find that generally something supported by one is supported by the others as well, meaning the lists are more "this is what we could test" and less "only these work".

That gives a nice "which options exist?" base to then look up in misc stores.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@anthony @powerllama We have quite a few old macs running NixOS or Proxmox at home - the oldest actually being a macbook air as well :)

It's 1st gen and runs like champ, but unfortunately its nvidia card does not have any driver support in modern Linux, so graphics-wise it's fairly limited today.
