It finally happened: Ancient Aliens (the TV show!) asked for permission to use some of our 3D reconstructions. I said no, because:

  1. They repeatedly laid claims based on pseudo-science, creationism, and magic (!).

  2. AA is inherently racist and colonialist by proposing ideas on extraterrestrials creating monuments of the human past.

  3. AA is actively hurting the respectability of real archaeological work.

Well, that felt rather good!

@bragi not specifically, but thanks to Lidar, this happens more and more. It is really fascinating what lies below vegetation and is barely visible!
Thanks for letting me know though! Happy New year!

ICYMI: I played and I wrote about it. There seems to be a pattern however and here is why that is a problem. It all boils down to break in, steal, destroy and repeat. Ultimately it shows Imperialism while depicting the past.

For the grand reopening of the newly restored National Museum in Afghanistan, three dioramas were requested.

The idea was to present the famous miniature paintings, found within these manuscripts, in a new way. We decided to create real perspective by transferring the two-dimensional miniatures into three-dimensional dioramas.

The final 3D-models, which were made exactly to scale, were then used by the model-maker to build the final reconstruction.

🏺 A small project got funded and in this post I describe what this project is about. It involves the Banquet Scene of Ashurbanipal and some additional fragments.
I am very happy to be able to do this in the coming months to try to solve a long-term puzzle.

NEW!
In the entrance area of the Nasrid Palace of the Alhambra, the foundations of two inner courtyards with a mosque, colonnades and fountains have been preserved.

We were tasked with visualising a reconstruction of both courtyards, with a particular focus on the glazed floor tiles and fountains in courtyard 2 as well as a view of the mosque in courtyard 1.

ExPresS XR is a virtual exhibition plug-in for Unity. In a recent talk the developers explained why and how to use it.
It is simple and usable and can easily be integrated into and . The talk is in German, but the images speak for themselves and the plug-in Wiki is in English.

The sanctuaries of Ancient Bactria are of the upmost importance for the research of the relations between indigenous and Greek cultures. The Oxus Temple is part of these sanctuaries.

In 2011, we were commissioned by the Eurasia Department of the German Archaeological Institute to reconstruct the temple. Besides a pure visualisation in 3D, we also montaged the model in existing photos, to get a feeling for the building in its environment.

ICYMI: Jason Steinhauer's book “History Disrupted” is focused on e-history, the way we communicate the past through social media. While he shows many examples on how communication works, he paints a grim picture for the future of communicating the past with AI.

Today, little is know with certainty about the purpose and function of early representative architecture of Uruk, among which the so-called “Stone-Cone Building” is perhaps one of the most puzzling examples.

The construction technique utilised is without parallel, neither in Uruk itself nor anywhere else in the world. The walls of the “Stone-Cone Building” are decorated with hundreds of thousands of coloured stone cones, immured in geometric patterns into the walls.
