What frustrates the hell out of me is that if they would just allow everyone who can work from home do so, it helps cut down emissions. It won’t solve the whole thing, of course. But it’s a super easy way to make a difference.

But control freak bosses are all “Good news, everyone! You must return to working in the office. Because it is so much better. It makes me feel important, you see. If I don’t see your butts in chairs in front of monitors, I don’t think you’re actually doing anything.”

Minor stuff like that makes me think that we’re really doomed here. Late stage capitalism won’t even do the easiest of easy things about climate change.

Yup. It’s just human storage and performative “productivity”. It’s about making the people who take credit for the hard work of others look and feel necessary.

I feel so bad for tall people on planes. It’s uncomfortable AF for all of us, but you guys have to become human origami just to sit. It’s insane that this shit is legal. I avoid flying as much as possible.

This US election was going to be a no-good-choices shitshow no matter what. But I really dread the AI-amped shitshow we’re gonna get.

It’s funny from the outside for sure. Until some crazy old creep tries to put in a launch code. Hopefully, they just give them a fake button to mash. Seems like the smart thing to do.

Making it opt-in is a much better way to offer this ridiculous “feature”. But I wager there will be future shenanigans. MS is very sneaky and passive-aggressive about pushing sketchy unwanted shit on its customers.

The HIPAA concerns are very alarming. And I agree with the spirit if the article. However, I’m not sure the article is correct when it says Recall cannot be disabled. I’ve already seen other articles telling you how to turn it off. The fact that it’s opt-out and not opt-in is a huge issue, though.

Yes, that is also a big problem. In general you should be very aware in online meetings / screen sharing to be very cautious and deliberate with what you show. That problem has burned a streamer or two. :) Having a boring vanilla “work machine” for that sort of thing is always a good idea. Windows Recall definitely makes this problem worse! You could be doing 100% legit professional ‘work stuff’ and it could still grab things that it shouldn’t (HIPAA and many other potentially sensitive bits of corporate data).

If you disable it, make sure to check on it regularly, as MS loves to turn things back on “for you” after Windows updates run. I’ve already seen some sysadmins saying they will run a scheduled task to make sure it stays dead.

The solution has been replaced with lorem ipsum, because spez.

I have to use Windows at work. Fortunately I’m a domain admin. I’ll be disabling this shit with conventional methods, and also write a scheduled task script to whack the SQLite DB…or whatever it takes to nuke it from orbit.

For home users, there are tools like NTLite that let you create custom installation images for Windows. Hopefully those will be able to remove it completely.

Damn good question!

Unfortunately I do a lot more than browsing and gaming when it comes to Windows. I hope to retire soon, and then make the full switch. I do like Linux, and have used it for some things.

I chose the wrong horse when I began my career over 3 decades ago.

I don’t have kids, and I haven’t gone to school in…checks calendar…a very long time. WTF do some parents drive kids to school when there are school busses? What am I out of the loop on? We either walked or took the bus when I was a kid. Don’t the parents have shit to do?

Thanks for the explanation. I should have known it’s the usual lack of proper infrastructure.

When beards are popular, don’t have a beard. When clean-shaven is popular, grow a beard. You want to zig when the crowd zags.

This varies greatly by terrain and location, but it’s easy to get lost on some trail systems. GPS is a huge help, but is limited by battery life and the amount of data the map has (heh, doesn’t have) about your immediate surroundings.

Many years ago, I went hiking with a large experienced group and one of the hikers (an attractive person I was interested in) got bored with the route the leader was taking us on. She talked me into splitting off with her. Sounds like the dumb premise of a porno or horror movie, I know.

But it wasn’t fun or romantic when we got lost for a couple of hours. It was scary as hell. Fortunately, we were able to backtrack to a trail junction where the main group found us again on their way back out. We got very lucky.

Nothing good ever came from that particular friendship, either. Other than learning some life lessons.

Anyway, stay with your group and make sure you have navigation well covered.

ASMR. Not afraid so much, just don’t want to be annoyed by the predictable responses from the skeptics and “comedians”. And ASMR is old news. People have mostly moved on. But I’m still very grateful for the AMSR performance artists and fellow aficionados out there.

Boozilla,

Yes. And I understand how weird and silly it must all look to people who don’t have it. But it gets tedious quickly.

I’m not an expert by any means, but I’ve seen a number of articles over the years that claim the FBI takes domestic terrorism very seriously, and is always actively investigating them. There have been some arrests, too. Is it enough? I seriously doubt it. But it’s not being ignored.

Freedom of speech (and a general “preference” for white people and conservatives among law enforcement) makes it slower-moving than I personally would prefer. But I have to hang on to a sliver of hope that more of these assholes will soon be arrested.

And while their side thinks they have “all the guns” they really don’t. They just walk around with them in public like psychos and dipshits. Our side has guns, too.
