This sort of thing used to be a “third rail” issue. The current political environment is so batshit, I think that rail is long gone.

I hope I’m wrong. Privatizing Medicare would cause massive suffering.

Some people get big computer monitors instead of a TV, because of shit like this.

I won’t lie, I do regret not making a quick buck off of it. I could have gotten in at 30-something and out at 40-something easily enough.

I just couldn’t stomach the thought of buying RDDT. I also guessed Pigboy Spez and his pals would leave us suckers holding the bag.

Turns out some brave peasants did make money on the IPO. Just not this peasant.

I suspect the stock will spiral down from here.

Years ago, back before it was totally shitty, someone on reddit posted a gigantic, comprehensive, well-sourced list of all the horrible shit Zuck / Meta have done over the years.

It’s unfortunate that long lists of damning facts can’t seem to move the needle very much. People don’t seem to care unless directly impacted.

I hate seeing Meta dig its tentacles in. Thanks for posting this.

Think of the atmosphere as a layer cake. The bottom of the cake is very dense and the higher up you go, these layers get less and less dense. Up on a mountain, the air is very thin.

In other words, there are fewer air molecules per cubic foot (volume of air). The molecules are farther apart and can hold less heat energy. Because “heat” is what we say when we mean molecules are moving around. The more they move, and the more molecules there are, the more heat you have.

It’s also helpful to know that the air is heated by the ground and oceans. The heat from our sun mostly passes right through the atmosphere, not directly warming the air up very much. But the surface of the planet will warm up wherever the sun is shining on it. And in turn, the warm ground or the warm surface water then gradually warms the air from the bottom up. (This is because heat is transferred in different modes: radiant, convection, and conduction.)

And the warm air does indeed rise. As it rises, it gradually spreads out and cools off again. Some of the heat even radiates back out into space.

There are “fountains” of air constantly circulating throughout the atmosphere, and this creates weather patterns. It tends to snow on mountains because the warm air has carried some moisture with it on its way up. As it cools and thins, it can’t carry the moisture any more, and the moisture precipitates out. Which is why we call it precipitation whenever it snows, rains, sleets, etc.

So by the time air reaches a high mountaintop, it’s probably going to be cool or even frigid cold.

This is also why hotter regions, like the southern US, tend to get very humid in the summer. The warm air can carry a lot of moisture, and there is a lot of warm surface water. Our sweat is less efficient when the air is moist, because it takes longer to evaporate and carry the heat away with it.

Deserts have few water sources. So they also have hot dry air, and much less humidity, and therefore little to no precipitation. But they also get cold at night, because there’s very little humidity to hold the heat overnight.

All of this is to illustrate the complex interactions between the sun, the atmosphere, and water (or lack of it) on the surface, and humidity in the air.

Inside an older building you’re more likely to experience warmer air on higher floors than lower floors because the air is trapped in a nearly closed system and hot air rises. Of course, HVAC engineers try to compensate for this in modern buildings.

Stories like this make me want to retire early. Most bosses just aren’t willing to pay for sufficient cybersecurity.

I will think about this every time we have a meeting to discuss the stupid “shame and train” faux phishing attacks they run on us at work.

Pro-Tip: If you set up the right kind of filtering you’ll never see those stupid things. (Fight club rules).

I hate Microsoft.

However, it’s expensive for them (or anyone) to maintain old software with never-ending security patches.

All software has a lifecycle. When they said Windows 10 would be the last version, we all knew they were full of shit. Never believe promises made by a corporate marketing team.

They also want to brag to shareholders about Windows 11 adoption numbers. So it’s in their interest to coerce more people into upgrading.

Usenet is a decades-old distributed message sharing system. It’s like an old school message board. To access it, you need a newsreader. Mozilla Thunderbird is one such example.

I have not accessed newsgroups in several years, so I don’t know how active it is today. But it used to be the go-to source for “warez” and bootleg media and porn. Oh yeah, and discussions threads on myriad topics. :)

Slashdot, digg, Reddit, lemmy, 4chan, etc. are all spiritual descendents of usenet.

The software tech for usenet is old, slow, and has a learning curve. You might find it frustrating to navigate and use. However, modern newsreaders probably hide some of the complexity.

So many options on how to handle this that don’t require killing the dog.

Like a lot of gun nuts, she can’t think outside of that very small box. Like a lot of gun nuts, she thinks this story makes her look like a “bad ass”.

It makes her look like a trigger happy moron. Any psycho can shoot a dog. It doesn’t require strength or skill. It’s not impressive at all. It reveals her to be a sick POS with zero problem-solving skills.

I do hope her political career is done. I hope we stop seeing stories about her, so she can take her place in the trash can of history where she belongs.

I have a lot of respect for Linux and use it here and there, but I am by no means an expert on it. The best thing I’ve done with it so far is running a Pi Hole at home.

Unfortunately, my job involves using MS Windows. A lot. After I retire…soonish…I hope to take some time and learn Linux better.

For my day-to-day Windows misery, I find that ShutUp10 does a great job of toggling off the bullshit you don’t want running. And it’s easy to toggle things back on if you ever need to. It’s a free program you can download and run. I send them a little money every year out of gratitude, but donations are completely optional.

Some FUD mongers will tell you that ShutUp10 ‘breaks’ Windows. That’s simply not true. It puts all the Windows settings you can change yourself in one easy-to-find place. Things that are normally scattered all over the UX and the registry.

While you could mess some things up using it if you’re not careful, it’s very good about color coding and letting you know which toggles are best to turn off, which ones are a little questionable, and which ones you should leave turned on (unless you know what you’re doing and can take the risk). I have used it for years now, on multiple PCs, with zero problems. It doesn’t make Windows 10/11 GOOD but it makes them less horrible.

Every level of government should require this, IMO.

If folks want to resign over it, I get it, and that’s fine. You are meant to be replaced regularly anyway. Career politicians are more of a bug than a feature.

If you don’t want people to know your finances, you shouldn’t be a public servant. Power should include transparency.

Life’s Been Good to Me So Far, Joe Walsh.

Lito Shuffle, Boz Scags.

Jukebox Hero, Foreigner.

Piano Man, Billy Joel.

Yup. Should be taking us towards a Star Trek future. Instead it will be Les Miserables with robots.

I went to public school in the 80s and every classroom had a very large analog clock on the wall. Even back then, it mildly annoyed me when teachers and other adults would say “half past” and so on. It always sounded archaic to my ears, even 40+ years ago.

I also get annoyed when people say “two thousand and twenty-four” for the year. Just say “twenty twenty-four”. We didn’t say “one thousand nine-hundred and eighty-four” back in the day, we said “nineteen eighty-four”.

Reddit is this weird combo of the unfunny pun-chain dipshits who take nothing seriously lumped in with the “AKSHUALLY” assholes who take themselves way too seriously.

The vibe on Lemmy is much better in general. And when you do encounter a random jerk here, blocking works. As another commenter pointed out, the lower population of Lemmy is a feature not a problem.

He makes some good points and some bad ones. But I bet we’d all be happier if we worked for employee-owned businesses with no shareholders or executives at all.

Is it immoral, unethical, or illegal to use movie prop money for collection plates, tip jars, beggars, and strip clubs?

If I’m paying for my goods and services with actual money, but using prop money for tips, is that bad? In my understanding, tips are given of one’s own free will and would be considered a gift to the recipient, the same as if I gave flowers or cookies as a tip. I’ve also seen fake money passed off by religious people that...

Boozilla,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

Unethical. Not even a gray area, IMO.

Something of limited but actual value–like a coupon or a book of stamps–would be more of a gray area.

I don’t know that we’re any smarter (or dumber) but I think the asshole filter has far less impact here. On reddit, niche subs often became so much worse after growing to front page status. Once the assholes start flooding in, the nice people tend to give up and leave.

Bah, I don’t care if the models are sexy or not. All advertising is evil and is designed to manipulate us and hack our brains. I try my best to avoid / ignore it when it’s possible to do so.
