I published my column about the awful layoffs at one Prytania Media studio just in time for the company to shut down another of its studios

The column: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/taking-layoffs-too-lightly-this-week-in-business

Possibility Space shutting down: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/possibility-space-shuts-down

And now the company founder is blaming the Possibility Space shut down on devs talking to the press after they saw the heartless way they shut down sibling studio Crop Circle. Absolutely shameless.

Back to writing This Week in Business after a few weeks off, and we're talking about AI hype being bolstered by stuff that really works (but maybe isn't AI the way people think of it)

This is what a young me would have drawn if asked to create a Batman image in the style of Rob Liefeld.

"Got some empty space? Put some muscle lines in there! Does it make it look like his left arm has two elbows? Not my problem!"

@SirTapTap If the hat looks as bootleg as the rest of this Batman, it probably doesn't stay on his head.

If you've figured out how to put effective guardrails around generative AI to make sure the info it gives is accurate and responsible, it seems to me like the only thing the AI is doing is creating filler text between the things that have actual value.

10 Years Ago This Month, VR was about to change the world while Oculus' Palmer Luckey and Minecraft creator Marcus 'Notch' Persson were two of the most beloved personalities in gaming.

Things have changed.

Seeing a big ol' bump in blockchain gaming pitches lately. This may be green shoots for a games industry recovery because it means fools with money are once again willing to throw it behind even the worst ideas out there.

BrendanSinclair,
@BrendanSinclair@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap Seems not great to have so much of the industry dependent on a constant influx of dumb money, i dunno

BrendanSinclair,
@BrendanSinclair@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap They still might be. Maybe this is people whose runway is running out trying to create buzz so they can pass the hat again. Who knows?

Wait, wait... When someone texts you something and puts a :3 after it, that doesn't mean I'm supposed to hear it in Zoidberg's voice?

Sony deciding to go all-in on live service games with an acquisition spree at the height of the pandemic was kinda like someone seeing the GameStop meme stock short squeeze and investing all they had when it was $483 per share.

BrendanSinclair,

@SirTapTap Yeah, the single-player stuff really carried the PS4 and PS5 generations for them, but I think the unsustainability of AAA budgets made it tempting for them to try to force a shift.

BrendanSinclair,
@BrendanSinclair@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap I think the ones that already work will mostly keep working, but they're so big and so demanding of time that anyone who wants to get an audience for a new one will have to break an existing one's hold on the audience first. And that's hard because these things build habits and compulsive play to become successful in the first place.

Cursed interview pitch with a dude who wants to talk about how Roblox is exploiting kids, and the solution he offers is Roblox but with blockchain.

In 2003, a website with ads like this was a genuine scandal, but it's about a million times better than your average browsing experience today.

This week's column was about exclusivity, how unsustainable AAA dev costs are pushing both MS and Sony to go multiplatform, and what weirdness this might mean for the future of consoles.

With Nintendo's next system now reportedly pushed to 2025 and possibly no big holiday releases for the Switch, I wonder if Nintendo finally returns to microconsoles with a Game Boy Mini later this year...

BrendanSinclair,
@BrendanSinclair@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap Sega tried to keep doing them with Game Gear and a second Genesis Mini but they pooched the Game Gear one and people wanted Saturn or Dreamcast Mini but the chips weren't cheap enough to make it viable.

I don't think Nintendo ever wanted to make the NES Mini, but it needed something for retailers to put on shelves in 2016 because Wii was dead.

I think most others either half-assed it (Sony) or didn't have enough of a library for more than one (TG16, NeoGeo)

BrendanSinclair,
@BrendanSinclair@mastodon.social avatar

@radmin @SirTapTap Scalpers absolutely jacked the price of the SNES and NES Mini to u reasonable levels, but I'm not sure how much of that played into the discontinuation. I think Nintendo always saw them as limited releases, like the Mario and Zelda Game and Watches, or the 3D Mario All-Stars collection on Switch

Skull & Bones released today.

I'm not normally the superstitious type, but if I were Ubisoft, this thing never would have come out.

@AAKL Yeah, but at least where I grew up it was very much associated first and foremost with the standard jolly roger pirate flag.

    @AAKL @GIbiz It's super interesting to me, having grown up in and covered the industry when so much of what is normal today was inconceivable. Cross-platform play? First-party games on competing platforms?

    Hey Fediverse today is my birthday

    If you would like to do something for me for my birthday, will you please send me a picture (or recording) of something broken (or not working correctly)?

    You can reply, or post it with and I will see it.

    Thank you <3

    @mcc Here's a Fast and Furious arcade game I saw in a movie theater last year. Happy Birthday!
