This one was a lot of fun to write but also made me pretty angry over how obviously broken IP protection methods are, who's allowed to profit off piracy openly and who isn't.

If I am elected president in 2024, I promise that we will go back to console add-ons that looked like they were eating the original console. This is my pledge to you. #retrogaming

First bit of This Week in Business is a fairly straight-forward retelling of one dev's horror story with Steam, followed by a section on how the people responsible for AI right now are manifestly unqualified for the job.

Read through reactions to the dev's story on Reddit and people are depressingly quick to lay all the blame on this dev because they didn't adhere to branding best practices or they didn't fully understand the ramifications of every single thing on Steam.

Some people are constantly looking for reasons to not empathize with others, insisting on a perfect victim before they're willing to say "That shouldn't have happened like that."

I hope every journalist writing a "Who is new OpenAI CEO Emmett Shear?" article reads this first.

WHY EVEN HAVE A RAMP

As if monitoring what people were reading on a story level wasn't damaging enough to the idea of ad-supported news, advertisers are increasingly afraid of their ads covering things people might have strong feelings about.

Can't see this going well for a news industry still largely beholden to advertisers for everything.

Beat Mega Man 1 for the first time by abusing save states to a ridiculous degree, and even having lived through that era and seeing even less forgiving games, it remains stunning to me games were ever designed that hard intentionally.

Prediction: Avi Arad is going to cast Tom Holland as Link and everyone's going to lose their stuffing over it.

Also, he'll be fine. It'll be fine.

Bonus prediction: They will jam an "Excuuuuse me, Princess!" easter egg in there, but Miyamoto won't be happy about it.

BrendanSinclair,

@mcoorlim Sure, but Avi Arad also did the original Blade, X-Men, and Spider-Man movies when comic movies (especially Marvel ones) had been poison for years. Arad is also a producer on the Tom Holland Spider-Man films and the Into/Across the Spider-Verse films, though I suspect that's more just him being included because of rights he has than because of any grand decisions he's making leading to the quality of those projects.

Best of luck to Aftermath, Remap, and other worker-owned journalism efforts. I have a ton of questions about how many groups of writers can make such things viable, and how they can make room for new or unknown talent without the name recognition/following to command a subscription on good faith, but we clearly need more alternatives to the corporate ad-driven model and these are encouraging steps in that direction

Bonus This Week in Business because Microsoft's crackdown on unlicensed Xbox peripherals looks like it will hurt a bunch of people who use accessibility devices to play games.

I wonder if Twitter is gradually pivoting to a free-to-play whale-hunting model because at this point anyone willing to be a bluecheck is so susceptible to Musk's nonsense they can probably be pumped for hundreds of bucks more a month.

I like that the Wall Street Journal's latest coverage of the House speaker debacle does its best to let readers know who the least awful option is, and how little it takes to earn that title.

@SirTapTap I would just like to see the party split at this point into two factions that don't have enough support to win anything anywhere. But that's a bit optimistic.

BrendanSinclair,
@BrendanSinclair@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap I suspect a bunch of the Dems hate each other almost as much, but compromise is such an inherent part of their nature that they can still function despite it. For the Republicans, compromise is anathema to everything they value.
