Victim reports his father missing. Police instead interrogated him for 17 hours, said they killed his dog, and withheld his meds from the victim. Victim tried to commit suicide in the room. (lemmy.world)

At one point during the interrogation, the investigators even threatened to have his pet Labrador Retriever, Margosha, euthanized as a stray, and brought the dog into the room so he could say goodbye. “OK? Your dog’s now gone, forget about it,” said an investigator....

There wasn’t even a crime and they got a confession.

This should make every confession they’ve ever received inadmissible.

So what you’re saying is a simple law proposal of “you cannot ask questions without a lawyer present. Any interview done without legal representation is illegal and inadmissible.” Would do wonders for civil rights?

I agree with the sentiment but then we get into the moral issues of collective punishment. I’d rather the individuals at fault suffer the financial hardships along with anyone who tries to help them cover it up.
Punishing the entire group incentivizes the entire group to help hide it.

And I find it unlikely no one else at the station knew what they were doing for all that time. ACAB.

The insurance company doesn’t get to make that call, the courts do. The insurance company gets to dictate the premiums each cop has to pay.

CileTheSane,
@CileTheSane@lemmy.ca avatar

The point is that the cost of lawsuits would come out of the police officer’s pockets due to higher premiums, instead of out of tax payer’s pockets which means the officers don’t care.

institute proper punishments for offending officers

That is a fantastic idea I whole heartedly agree with. Who is in charge of assigning the punishments? Police unions refuse to have civilian oversight.

Which cops? Do we have their names?

CileTheSane,

See, this is why I’m not writing the full text of the law right here. That would be up to legal experts. I figured “The official legal representation of the person being interviewed” would have been a given, but here we are…

That’s because for Conservatives you’re allowed to take lives to protect property. You are not allowed to damage property to protect lives.

Really shows where their values are.

You don’t understand:
A white woman can have a black baby.
A black woman cannot have a white baby.

This is very normal and makes perfect sense. Stop looking at it closely.

It asserted that any person with even one ancestor of black ancestry

I think that means technically everyone is Black.

A base 4 number system has 4 numbers in it: 0, 1, 2, and 3.
After 3 the next numbers are 10, 11, 12, 13, 20, 21, etc.

A base 10 number system has 10 numbers in it, 0 through 9.

Hexadecimal is base 16: 0-9 followed by A-F

The alien using a “base 4” number system does not have a single digit for the number “4”. They represent four of something with the number “10”, so for them, their four digit number system is “base 10”.

Any time they need to sell some more merch they just get Brennan on an episode of Game Changer.

For those unaware Taskmaster has a YouTube channel where you can watch full seasons.

You must know nothing about owning a home if you think rent just goes straight into a landlord’s pocket.

Is the landlord making a profit? That comes from rent going into their pockets.

that doesn’t mean paying for it is a scam.

Choosing to pay for it, sure. Most renters would rather own but can’t because landlords have bought up a limited supply of a resource in order to profit off it. When scalpers do that they get vilified, but do that with something necessary for survival and for some reason it becomes an investment?

“People with more money than sense would rather pay someone else to do it” is not a good argument for forcing everyone else to also pay someone else to do it.

Someone who has reached the point of abandoning all computer technology entirely would probably be willing to make the effort of installing a friendly Linux build. It’s not as complicated as people think.

CileTheSane,

How would one organize such a movement?

You’d be surprised how much technology certain Amish communities use. They’ll have machines that operate on water instead of electricity.

Right, having no computers in your life at all is easier than installing Linux…

Are you guys so fragile in your beliefs that you can’t even handle a simple suggestion of a benefit to an opposing view?

What was the benefit again? Normalizing doing it is not a benefit on its own.

“Can someone explain the benefit of wearing your underwear on the outside of your pants?”

“To normalize wearing your underwear on the outside of your pants”

So it’s just a fashion statement then?

When someone asks “seriously, what is the argument for doing this, what is the benefit?” A response that exists solely of “to get other people to do it too” does not answer the question as to why that is desirable.

If we move the theoretical out of fashion and into safety, such as someone complaining about people insisting on lying face down in the middle of the street, a response of “they do this to normalize people lying face down in the middle of the street” should not be received well. All it’s doing is advocating for making people less safe with zero justification as to why.
