hey who decided art needs names and statements and stuff, I wanna apply to an island art show and they want an artist statement, an artist biography, titles for each piece, titles for the overall show, and a show description

I just want to make my birds, please

(wife and I have come up with the idea of giving the birds human names. the flicker might be Reginald.)

One of those things where you gave to write about yourself in the third person? shudder

Seriously?!?

That’s horrible.

@inherentlee

That’s very true actually. ☺️

wasn't kidding when I said get ready for my basket weaving era y'all (wife and I took a lil class!)

CurlyParakeet,

@inherentlee those are lovely!

y'all better be ready for my basket weaving era. A sweet older woman just taught me how to make cordage from plant fibers (this is nettle).

truly I should never be introduced to new crafts 🤣

Off the back of this I went out and found nettles today. They’ve been prepared and are currently drying. Hopefully I can experiment tomorrow!

I googled around and there seemed to be a consensus on:

  • strip the leaves and hairs off the stalks with gloves (some do it with bare hands 😳)
  • gently flatten the stalks with a bits of wood
  • peel the “bark” off the outside of the stalks
  • divide the bark lengthways into thinner strips
  • leave “bark” to dry

And that’s where I’m up to.

Next I’m going to soak the strips to make them pliable and then try make cordage (method TBD). I guess we’ll see how it goes!!!

Quick experiment done - fairly successful.

I tried to go for a thicker weight but found it hard to incorporate new strands so went thinner. Bit messy, but ok for a first attempt (I think??)!

I sort of followed these instructions- https://www.jonsbushcraft.com/cordage%20making.htm

Cordage made from nettle stands. Coiled on wood effect floor. Two pence piece for scale. It’s shoelace thickness and about 2 foot long.

It was good fun! I probably should have dried the nettles more, but never mind!

Yes, if you put in thick gloves, you can rub all the leaves and stingers off. Then you can handle the stalks without getting stung.

[ordered some, will order more, want to always have the next book ready - thanks!]

Help.

I need books to read to my daughter (9).

She suggests Famous Five but I would like something with a bit more modern "mindset" than the girls always helping in the kitchen and the boys in the barn.

Ideas?

Also, thanks for boosts as my bubble is German speaking.

Also, wow! boost some of those good answers from the community... wow! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

@samsteiner

The Mr. Penguin books by Alex T Smith are fun (a bit like Indiana Jones, but with a penguin and a spider).

Riddle of the Runes and Way of the Waves by Janina Ramirez are good too - mysteries solved by a viking girl and her wolf.

I don't think people need to be as worried about A.I. as they think. 🤣

The prompt I wrote was, "An illustration of a Mastodon eating a blue bird. No background. In the style of anime."

I’ll see your saggy blue mastodon and raise you… well… I’ll raise you whatever this is.
