Dave, to technology in OpenAI Quietly Deletes Ban on Using ChatGPT for “Military and Warfare”
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

I mean, there was all that drama where the board formed to prevent this from happening kicked out the CEO trying to do this stuff, then the board got booted out and replaced with a new board and brought back that CEO guy. So this was pretty much going to happen.

Dave, (edited ) to nostupidquestions in I'm aware of kbin, mastodon, and lemmy. Are there any other federated applications out there?
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Here’s a list of 130: the-federation.info/#projects

One I like not mentioned so far is bookwyrm, which is like a federated goodreads (track books you’re reading, review them, read other’s reviews).

Edit: the flagship instance is bookwyrm.social

I think it’s worth noting that Mastodon is by far the most mature. Everything else is buggy and may not always work the way you might expect but I think many are still worth using if you can put up with the quirks.

Dave, to unitedkingdom in Princess of Wales says she is undergoing cancer treatment - BBC News
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

It says she expects to make a full recovery.

In the video she says that she underwent abdominal surgery and at the time they thought it wasn’t cancerous, but subsequent tests showed that it was. And they she was recommended to have preventative chemo.

Sounds to me like they removed an abdominal tumour, it was probably successfully removed, and now she’s getting chemo just in case there’s any spreading or any they missed.

but can we please place a limit on brand new accounts or possibly require posts from this hosting site Mintboard to get vetted by a human?

For the record, admins have been screaming for more moderation capability but lemmy devs (all two of them) have been focusing on things that let lemmy stay online at all given the platform wasn’t ready for the massive user growth.

If you have the ability to build these features, I’m sure they will be added with gratitude. Otherwise, development is happening as fast as it can. The devs have applied for sponsorship to allow a third dev to help, but this hasn’t been awarded yet.

Some admins have built tools that help, but given there are 1,000 instances, it’s easy to belong to an instance without such tools. There’s also a complex setup of which posts are removed from where when a moderator removes something when they are on a different instance.

I’m actually wondering how many Russian billionaires are celebrating today that the tax department has lost the records of all the tax bills they haven’t paid.

Yeah, private and anonymous are two different things. Google and facebook still know which websites you visit (even if you use neither, because the websites you visit use their tools). There are Bluetooth trackers in the restaurants and shops you visit. Your phone reports back everywhere you go. It knows who you hang out with (and where). Your credit card transaction history tells them what you spend money on, even more so if you use google pay or apple wallet. Your car reports in on your whereabouts. Your TV is listening in for keywords to send to advertisers, and your ISP tracks every site you visit.

They know exactly what you do, and how to make you buy what they want. But for the most part if they can’t link the data to your name then you are anonymous.

Lemmy is anonymous (no one knows your name unless you tell them), but it is not private (everyone can see your posts).

Dave, to world in New Zealand's central bank defends Maori language use
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Long story short, after the recent election we have a centre right, further right, and a populist party in a coalition government. It took them 6 weeks to finalise their coalition agreements and now they have stated their intend to roll back pretty much anything that the previous (centre-left, single party) government brought in.

However, use of Māori in the public service is not new, it has been around for decades. But recently some departments have started using their Māori name as their main name and the English name as a secondary name (instead of the other way around), so all the old white guys are confused and angry.

Dave, to newzealand in Divers caught with 486 pāua in large sacks near Kaikōura.
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

As the other commentor said, these are elsewhere known as abalone, a large shellfish.

This is a pretty poor article because it explains nothing.

NZ has carefully managed fisheries to keep stocks sustainable as recreational fishing is very popular. There are minimum sizes they must be (the article says 159 were under this limit). It’s also illegal to (SCUBA) dive for them, you have to collect near land where you can get to without diving gear. This article says the poachers were divers.

There are also daily limits per person. These vary by region because of differences in the stock, but the limits are generally 5-10 per person per day. These two people had nearly 500.

But none of the above matters. The pāua are so plentiful where they were collecting because they were collecting in a marine reserve. In that marine reserve it’s illegal to fish or collect any shelfish, it’s a protected area.

Dave, to games in Counter Strike 2 is surprisingly awful on Steam Deck right now

Maybe, maybe not. But I think people expect a game made by Valve to run on gaming hardware made by Valve, even if it’s only for casual playing.

Dave, (edited ) to newzealand in Te Pāti Māori promise prison abolition in new justice policy
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

I cannot support Act policies, no matter how much I dislike the other parties. Here are some scary Act policies:

  • They want to abolish the Human Rights Commission
  • Allow unregulated overseas investment from OECD countries
  • Sell all or part of many state owned enterprises (e.g. sell 49% of KiwiRail).
  • Sell public hospital buildings to private investors
  • Water pollution would be managed by letting companies bid for the right to pollute up to the allowed pollution levels
  • They want to repeal the zero carbon (by 2050) act
  • They will abolish the building act, replacing it with mandatory insurance. The idea is if it’s not built to a good standard then insurers won’t insure.

And here are some others (some seem to overlap with National):

  • They want to abolish fair pay agreements
  • They want to abolish rules that protect valuable natural areas
  • They want to decrease tax for higher earners, and increase tax for lower earners
  • They would re-allow live exports of animals
  • They oppose any laws banning hate speech
  • They would abolish ministries for Pacific people, Ethnic communities, Women, Māori development, etc.
  • Reduce the rate superannuation increases each year, and stop putting money in the super fund
  • Remove the Matariki public holiday
  • Reintroduce the 90 day fire at will period
  • Remove or reduce government kiwisaver contributions for most workers
  • They want to increase the prison population (see my other comment about private prisons)
  • They want to introduce privately owned toll roads
  • They want to pay emissions trading scheme revenue back to everyone as a tax credit, instead of spending it on reducing emissions
  • They want to stop contractors from challenging their status, to allow employers to bully employees into being paid as a contractor to avoid paying leave entitlements and other protections
  • Make a literacy test a requirement to get parole (again, private prisons want people to stay longer)
  • Hold a referendum to introduce a rule that allows anyone to take the government to court if they think new laws don’t fit a set of standards
  • Abolish the climate emergency response fund
  • I’m gonna quote this one: "This party says that the current government requires councils to review speed limits and reduce them in high-risk areas like school zones. This party believes that this is slowing people down and making society less productive."
  • Create a new state owned enterprise to manage roads, being required to return a profit via charging people for the use of roads (no current plans stated to sell off 49% but I think it’s implied)

Have a read of this: lemmy.nz/comment/2326509

It’s not about ruling out detaining people. It’s that prison is a terrible answer to the problem. Some person thinks that crime is acceptable. Let’s put them in a building full other other people who think that crime is acceptable, so the only people the associate with are criminals. It’s a system that makes more criminals, and it will be seen as obviously a bad idea in 100 years.
