Allotment life.... Largely images and information about our successes and failures from our allotments in the centre of England. Mostly no dig, mostly raised beds apart from the fruit and potatoes which are in tubs. We keep chickens too and even though we have been doing this for a number of years we learn something new every week. It can be hard and exhausting but at the same time it can be rewarding and fascinating. We love it…

Doing well 😊 The newly planted corn and beans may still be a little pale but they’re growing fast. The autumn raspberries are bushing out just fine, the spring onions are ready to pick and the thyme & sage flowers are attracting the bees 🐝

Bits and bobs ✔️ Planted more kale 🥬 and squash seeds plus some more coriander 🌿 The polytunnel has been watered & weeded again, we have our first padron pepper 🌶️ and the Welsh onion bed is rolling along 👍

Root vegetables 🥗 Time to thin the parsnips out so there is just one plant per station 😀 Quite a slow process as we have to be so careful not to pull everything out. We thin two rows a day over a week just in case we cock something up and have to transplant👇

Potato update 🥔 The potatoes we liked from the Tesco finest range have finally appeared ❗️They were planted on the 9th May 2023 and are called Venezia 👍

Corn 🌽 and dwarf french beans 🫘 planted. 👍 We have removed the fabric covering from the beds as it was too difficult to get the corn roots out last year 😢 Safari beans 🫘 and Lark sweetcorn 🌽

Project brassica update ❗️ The two posts on the left were put in yesterday and the two on the right are actually water points 💦 There is fine wire at a height of six feet between the posts and diagonally across. Plan is …. when the netting arrives we will create a large brassica cage that we can walk into instead of dealing with the hoops and netting on the current beds.

Sometimes it’s hard keeping up with the tasks 🥲 Watering the plot seems to take an age ❗️ Comfrey chop today. This is the second time this year that we’ve cut this comfrey bed back 😎 It also gives the spare broad beans 🫘 a chance to grow ……

Looking good 👍 Polytunnel padron peppers 🌶️ cucumbers 🥒 and aubergines 🍆 are coming along nicely although maybe a little chilly this morning - going down to 5.4 degrees

Getting ready for a few days away 😏 So we have placed many of the plants we are still hardening off (or they’re just not ready to go outside), into trays to keep them damp ❗️

The corn had been moved outside under netting to harden off

Last toot for today ❗️ Potted on a number of the squash plants that have germinated nicely 👍 Most of the butternut squash failed to germinate so this is the second attempt 😊

Potato update 🥔 Eight of the eleven tubs pictured were planted on 01/03 so with some hope the second early spuds could be ready in two or three weeks 👍

Fruit check 🤓 It looks like we may have lots of cherries this year🍒 The blueberry plants are in full bloom 🫐 and the currant bushes are making currants

Odd job day today 🤓 Picked wild garlic flowers to make more garlic butter, took the netting off the small chard bed then planted the land cress and finally planted three kalette plants ( which we have never grown before) ❗️

Hosta la vista 🍃 The Hosta plants that we dealt with last month are looking really healthy. 👍 Two of them were divided and re-potted and the other two were re-potted into larger pots. 😊

Sweet Peas 🌸 Well we have eventually got round to planting the sweet peas in their forever home for this year. 👍 Not a huge fan because they don’t last long enough to enjoy😊

Recycling ♻️ The long chard bed which we took the netting off yesterday has been weeded (well the bigger weeds). 🤓 Then for the greater good they have been recycled to the ladies 🐓 .

Couldn’t wait 🤨 but there was a reason ❗️ We’ve moved the Fenella strawberries 🍓 into two of the new triangular beds in the fruit cage 👍 One of the two beds moved was way behind the other in terms of growth. 🥲 New beds, new compost and renewed hope 🤓

Runner beans 🫘 take 2….. As the moonlight beans didn’t germinate we ordered some firestorm runner beans. Following advice, we soaked them on damp tissue and they germinated in five days. 👍 They have now been dropped in holes with the tap root facing down and we’re hoping that gives them a good start 🙏

Tomato time 🍅 again 🧐 We have finished planting the bush tomatoes in the large greenhouse 👍 Ola Polka, Red Alert, Sumnerlast, Amateur, Hienz 1350 and Gold Nugget.

Potato update 🥔 The last net has come of the Picasso tubs this morning so they can now grow away 👍 They are covered to stop the cats and foxes from digging in the pots before tre shoots appear ❗️The nets are then put away in the bag they came from and stored away in back of beyond. 🤨 If I don’t label things nowadays I have no chance of remembering what is what🧐
