Not sure why you added “there’s just a difference between missiles and rockets”. There is a difference, but is not particularly relevant here. Many people mix up these terms anyway: the post you replied to mentions missiles but Hamas, as per linked graphic, probably only has rockets. It may matter to the iron dome system, as that relies on a predictable path of a rocket to decide what to target.
As much as i like Lemmy and want it to succeed, I’m not yet convinced it will. I’m still on Reddit (until the app i use, Narwhal, starts charging) and there just is neither the variety of channels nor a similar level of interaction here. In some ways that is a good thing, fewer shitposts, no endless puns and obscure memes and references etc. But i do miss the often interesting comments and discussions you see in the more niche subs on reddit. It may improve over time when user numbers grow, but i don’t think Lemmy, or the bigger fediverse, is ready for the general public yet.
Regardless of the negative aspects, Meta joining the Fediverse will definitely make the numbers of active users explode. This will probably bring the network and its concepts to many people and also a matter of public debate.
I don’t think it will ever be mainstream. It’s confusing enough for IT literate people with a basic understanding of the concept, I can’t see it ever getting popular with the wider public.
My main concern is the overlap between lemmy instances, meaning me and my mate can be looking at for example a channel named ‘news’ and see different contents because we are on different instances. So you either subscribe to all news channels on all major instances and see lots of duplicated posts, or miss out on some posts.

I too would like them to be marked read on interaction. But you can do it manually. Not got an unread message, but it’s either swipe left/right or the three dots menu, not sure.
We have vacuum breakers but my dad will inevitably remove it because he can't stand that humming sound. He also insists on leaving the hose bib/valve at all times, even when he's not using it....
I don’t think they will poison themselves. I had to look up what a vacuum breaker is, never seen one in the uk, and not seen reports of anyone being poisoned due to not having one. Check valves are sometimes used (for water heaters for example) but those are silent.
I’m off on holiday tomorrow and will have basically no internet for over a week. So naturally I’m downloading all the media I can think of, just in case of downtime....
e.g. - I tried to pull up lemmy.world/c/news, assuming searching communities for “news” would bring it up, but it doesn’t show in the community list, even though other local communities like “sportsnews” do. Does the search not work as expected currently?
Something weird going on there. !news does not appear in the lemmy search results (ios version), even though it has 12k subscribers and plenty of posts. Turkey_news for example does show up but does not even appear to have any posts.
Hey. Just a quick shout-out to the devs at Memmy for helping me have a fun introduction to Lemmy and the growing world of the Fediverse. Really love what you’re doing, so thanks!

I initially had a similar reaction, as ‘active users’ in the title makes it look like you are stating a fact. ‘Reported active users’ in the title would have given a suggestion that you are (rightly) questioning the number.
Edit: that icon disappears when switching to compact mode. Which I use because I don’t like the large images on some posts. It often leaves me with only two posts visible in my feed: https://i.imgur.com/x91R2Vn.jpg
I’m not sure if Lemmy, kbin, or something else will work out to be the community favorite, so I’m trying out both and would encourage others to do the same....
Trying out both… Nothing wrong with trying out things, but (coming from deddit) this is my problem with the fediverse. You can easily end up with two or more flashlight communities that have a lot of the posts in common, as the content creators may make the effort to post in multiple communities, but many commenters wont do that so each replicated post will have its own comment stream. Hopefully, things will get better once the federation between lemmy and kbin works as intended. At the moment, i can see the kbin posts, but cant vote or comment, or subscribe it seems

Hello Everyone!...
Will the Fediverse reach Mainstream in 2024?

How do you search specifically for communities in memmy?
