Part 5 of my "how I build in Fallout 4" series shows how I approach building within a ruined structure.

Embracing the shape and constraints, and solving the problems that arise.

I create a workshop area and some accomodation for settlers at Jamaica plain.

crew, I'm at a loss what to do with the inside of Jean's collar thing.

Do I make it dark grey like her boots? Yellow (the chest will be yellow too)? Purple (as the cult icon sash thing on her hip will be)? Leave it white? Other?

Taking suggestions!

DrH,
@DrH@warhammer.social avatar

@erikcats What colour skin are you going for? With it surrounding the head you want a contrast so that it frames the head and makes it stand out.

Purple is a good colour contrast with yellow; pale skin = dark purple (the dark grey of the bood would also work), dark skin = magenta, pinkish skin = blue/purple, cool/dead skin = red/purple.

DrH,
@DrH@warhammer.social avatar

@erikcats If you are adding some purple to the skin, a purple surround may bring it out more, or may be too much purple.
Maybe neutral grey, like the boots and maybe purple around the edge?

You could use MSpaint to roughly colour-in your photo there and try out colour combinations (something I often do)

DrH,
@DrH@warhammer.social avatar

@erikcats Other image manipulation programs also exist.

You just have to roughly place some blobs of colour in vaguely the right shape to see if it works for you. E.g. my raider conversion, MSpaint over black basecoat Vs. final painted model

What’s up Mastodon, how have you been? I’m hanging mostly on the other blue place, but I’ll try to be around a little more on here, too. 🧡

@kimhu good to see you on here again. One of the many artists I've missed since deleting my twit' (the only thing I'm missing from there). Followed for the fallout art, but hope Momo (sp? The mushroom girl) and the gang are still doing good.

Another old settlement tour in Fallout 4.

Oberland station.

I made use of some large foundation pieces to turn this small area into a heavily fortified settlement.
And using the slope of the land I created a hidden basement too.

If you've been bitten by the Fallout bug (first, have that looked at) then maybe you'll like to see something of the games.

Here's a tour of one of my settlements built in Fallout 4.

Built at Abernathy farm, and making use of all the space available in square-footage and in the height afforded by the pylon.

After just over 3 years (with some lengthy pauses in work) the Raider conversion is complete.

Built for my personal army/collection. I wanted to create an attack helicopter type vehicle which I hope you can see the influences on the design.

There are a lot of changes and additions and many photos (52) to show.
If you are good boys, girls, NBs, and others, I'll post some more later.

More views of the Raider gunship conversion.

The order of painting for this was:

  1. Bone interior.
  2. Yellow/orange blends.
    2.5. All that was masked off.
  3. Red through the airbrush.
  4. Blue underside.
  5. The rest...

Predator tank conversion.

Heavily modified for my personal army/collection.

External:
Changed the engine layout,
Added custom sponsons,
Spaced armour,
Bits and pieces,
Working hatches,
Dozer blade...

Internal:
Fully decorated,
Ork driver (plugged in, VR set up),
Tyranid gunner (lots of re-posing)...

This one took months to complete.
Many of the details are #Scratchbuilt

More photos of my Predator tank conversion.

The dozer blade is made from plasticard, heated and bent into shape.

The support structure is mostly plastic sprue and the pistons are plastic rod/tube.

The dozer blade can actually be removed, leaving the frame behind. The idea being that I could create different blades.
I have not got around to making any more.

Refinery?

So named (with the ?) as it reminds me of a refinery, but I had no idea what I was building as it was built.

Scratch-built from household junk and a few kit parts.

Space Marine for scale.

High angle view of the front of the refinery. A door is visible, flanked by posters; one a warning the other an advert for engineers.

DrH,
@DrH@warhammer.social avatar

@MacBalance Thanks. Yes, you're not wrong. It wouldn't be much more effort to chop up the sprue and make more regular looking support beams. But I wanted to make use of the weird sprue shapes and play on the difference between that and the clean pipe and wire shapes. One of my more "arty" moments.

DrH,
@DrH@warhammer.social avatar

@MacBalance True, that could work.

Thanks. Appreciated.

Ol' one toof.

For this Nob I wanted to create an ork that was the least "comic relief" I could.

In addition to a slight re-posing and modifications to the weapons, I also bulked up the body with some epoxy putty: add a blob to each existing muscle and smooth it in.

I also opened the jaw wider. This left only one tooth and a lip ring. Ol' one toof was born.
The boss pole also reflects this.

Then add a touch of blood from the last person that laughed.

@mastosalo lol
This one is "Humbrol Clear Colour 1321"
While the results are good, I can't really recommend it. It's a bit too stringy, and doesn't clean off the brush easily.

What I can recommend is my method: use an old brush that has a mixture of long and short hairs in odd clumps and just splat and streak it across the model.
For large areas, darken the central area before/after.

Mech' workshop.

Built from scratch, using mostly card (for the exterior) and various pieces and plastic stock (to fill the interior).

Designed to fit the Infinity ttg aesthetic, and be playable.
Includes scatter terrain pieces, and removable roof for interior access.

The interior of heavily detailed, and stands as a diorama of sorts.

Szalamander pilot miniature for scale.

Rooftop paving and small garden feature. A figure stands to one side and some crates are visible in the background.
Rear view of the workshop. A ladder allows rooftop access. Some graffiti is visible around back.
Interior of the workshop. Lots of details, from the central robotic arms to tool storage, various scatters pieces of "mechs" to a sole coffee cup on a table.

DrH,
@DrH@warhammer.social avatar

I created 3 pieces of scatter terrain to go with Mik's Mech' Shop.

The crates are casts of my own wooden box kits, and the cardboard boxes and pallets are made of card. Plus some fabric soaked in PVA/water to cover them.

As a refresher between projects I knocked out this silly little idea. And it's proven more popular than any of my other projects every time I've shared it, now it's Mastodon's turn.

Space Marine Inceptors.

I have a strong dislike for clear flight stands, so I do things like this.

This trio of Inceptors all have a handy piece of terrain to keep them at about the right height.

One is hopping a fence with the help of his jet-pack.
Another is landing on a box (and is lucky the box has crushed).
And the last is smashing his way though a wall.

Also of note is that I used 9 different metallic paints on these.

This Inceptor is hopping a fence. The fence (baring an Imperial Aquila) is bending under the weight.
The Inceptor is focused on aiming his gun and not paying any mind to the wall he is kicking through.
This Inceptor is landing on a box, his jet-pack is powering down. The box is crushing under the weight.

DrH,
@DrH@warhammer.social avatar

And last, but not least, the brick wall Inceptor.

The wall is made of "mostly" separate bricks of plaster and foamcore.
Then pieces of broken plaster were placed individually to create the cracked plaster layer on each face of the wall.

Tractor.
Stylised, cartoon concept sketch.

Rather than my usual accurate scale model building, I decided to do something cartoony as a present for a farming sim' fan.

Bodywork is mostly sprue and plasticard and the tyres are a thin layer of epoxy putty over polystyrene foam.

Broken statue.

Based around a plaster cast taken from an old Terminator 2 (cast the skin on Arnie) play set.

Now, a hard-fought location on the battlefield of the future.
Even though the statue has fallen, someone has set up a shrine with the head and built barricades.
Those barricades have not held... what has become of the occupant and what is the future of this location?

Lots of details in this piece. Too many to cover in this post.

View of the upper torso of the fallen statue, it still holds the flag for "Cadia".
View of the inside of the barricade and the shrine which now holds the head of the statue. a splash of blood near a campsite tells a dire story.
View of the base of the statue. Only the feet remain on the pedestal.

DrH,
@DrH@warhammer.social avatar

The barricade for the broken statue shrine had been built up around the statue's pieces:

A metal plate, held up with I-beams, protects the statue's upper body piece and the flag it still holds.

A more ornate wall section leans against the plinth.

And between the two was a sturdy wooden fence.
Clearly, this was the weak link in the barricade.

View through the gap between the legs of the broken statue and the plinth, framing the breach in the barricade beyond.

Pox Walkers.

2 squads of 'em. One lot as they came and only painted, the other squad (at the bottom) have been modified to make them unique.

Arm and weapon swaps, plus some additional putty work is what distances them from the vanilla mini's.

Had "fun" researching dead/diseased flesh in preparation for painting these.

@erikcats Of course. Especially when they have no interest in taking over the world.
