Happy Day to all those who celebrate! I just started listening and so far so good!

"Cowboy Carter’s” second track is a cover of The Beatles' “Blackbird.” I'm digging it. The instrumentation is almost exactly the same as The Beatles' version, save for some ✨modernization✨ (bass synths, etc.).

Given that "Blackbird” was originally inspired by the Little Rock Nine, I appreciate hearing a quintet of black women singing it while The Beatles back them up.

Just saw some updated images of what a black hole looks like from Earth's radio telescopes. So cool.

Also cool: When the “Event Horizons" team released the first image of a black hole, I immediately thought of Soundgarden's album “Superunknown" with the hit song “Black Hole Sun.”

The album released in 1994 and the black hole image was released in 2019. Between the similar looks and the singularity reference, I think it’s pretty damn cool.

@sumo That logo design is so clean. I'll give them a listen for sure 👍

I have seen some people jump to the aging infrastructure meme on this bridge collapse, but it strikes me that it's more a question of design criteria.

I think the bridge designer was simply not told that he had to make piers withstand an impact of this size.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/francis-scott-key-bridge-collapse-engineering/

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

@John
Spent the day talking to a good friend who’s a structural engineer and that's what he was pointing to.

“The code is constantly evolving, for instance if that happened to a new bridge, it would never have collapsed. Is it ethical to leave old structures out of current code? If the answer is no, then over 75% of structures in the country probably need to be redesigned.”

I have a Dell 3630 that I bought new, at "a good price, for $600." I think this here below is an amazing deal. The 3630 supports one NVMe drive and three hard drives or SSDs in a very strong industrial chassis. It's far beyond consumer quality. So I recommend it, if one NVMe and three SSDs fits your bill.

Good looking out. There's a huge chance that I'm going to purchase this today for Plex. Just need to make sure it fits where I'd like to put it.

My buddy already has a CPU, GPU, and RAM, so this ends up being quite affordable.

Speaking of Apple, Google, and antitrust, it is a remarkable shame that cars are limited to Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

What you'd really want, if you wanted a chance to unseat the duopoly, would be an open standard for display remoting.

Then anyone could connect to the dashboard and display their content.

Kids could do it with their Raspberry Pi.

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

@John
That'd be awesome. I was briefly interested in modding Mazda's Skyactiv-gen infotainment, but I leased my 3s and was worried what the dealer might do if I screwed something up. Plus, it seemed like everything was easier to do with a PC and, well, you know.

IIRC the system is Linux-based and Mazda initially had hopes that indie (or larger) devs would build apps for it. Never happened at scale, but there were some fun projects that I came across.

I haven't read enough about the DOJ's suit against Apple to have a well-informed opinion, but my kneejerk reaction is that I hope Apple gets its shit rocked. Underdog Apple is best Apple.

(Apologies to anyone who owns AAPL)

My dad & step-mom are on a trip in France and I just got this message from pops:

“This our little Fiat 500. It’s a 6-speed manual transmission hybrid. The “streets” in this village are about 12” wider than the car with stone walls on both sides! It’s the first time I’ve driven a stick shift in almost 30 years! We both are doing fine with smooth shifts and no stalls.”

So proud of them :’)

Later tonight I'm going to give Rebel Without A Cause a watch for the first time. I pop my jacket collar way too often to have never seen it.

I borrowed (and ripped) the Blu-ray from my library and the librarian who helped me is looking forward to hearing my thoughts. She's starting to recognize me as the guy who takes out a lot of movies — I always wonder what she thinks when I grab an oddball pick.

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

Thanks in large part to the Bethpage Library I've built a pretty solid movie library, but I have a long way to go. I'm sitting at 107 movies (825 GB) and I've tried to keep the visual quality high when compressing.

Despite being a HandBrake.app noob, I'm getting fairly solid results. The hardware encoder in my laptop is a killer time & energy saver. With my usual settings I can encode 4K Blu-ray at roughly 85fps and 1080p titles around 330fps.

If it isn't corner-balanced to account for the weight of the driver, I'm not interested.

Wedged in a full size +1" spare in my wrx that only came with a pump and foam. Took the tools and jack and tossed them in a bag, the foam went directly in the trash. Too bad that the load floor isn't flat now, but better than what happened last time

Damn that's good work.

Best I could possibly do with my ‘Yata was a 16" spare from a Yaris. Mazda doesn't make an OEM solution anymore -- just a stupid fix-a-flat kit.

The spare has already come in handy. Saved me time and money.

Top o’ the morning. Just got linked to this Reuters story from Daring Fireball and thought it'd be up your alley.

I love my ad-free experiences, but I get that I'm not the general masses. It's wild to me that Meta is offering such a good deal and yet that’s STILL not enough for some people.

It's kinda like demanding a free lunch from Meta without any intention of buying a beer.

Morning friends! QOTD for today...

What car design has had the worst decline or improvement over it's model life?

I'll start us off with the decline of the Toyota Tacoma.

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

@Mark @Basmitharts
I actually like my lil angry-faced car, but I do agree that friendly & curvy would’ve been nice in a sea of angry cars.

NB is my favorite exterior design. Specifically an NB in BRG with tan leather is one of the best-looking Miata specs IMO.

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

@Basmitharts Frankly I love all of them, but I think they've gone in the right direction.

"Woman attempts to evade officers during chase by driving into ocean at Marina del Rey." She then attempted to swim away, leaving her two small dogs in the car.

I think this woman was trying to live a missing episode from Arrested Development.

That show was not supposed to provide role models.

Taking Jayden to her family home is a pretty fun drive by Long Island standards since most of the trip is on the more "technical” half of the Southern State Parkway. We usually head back later in the evening when there isn't any traffic. It also means that I can (very safely & very legally) hustle down the road a little bit.

On my way home last night I cruised alongside a red GR86 for a few exits. What a cool-ass car. The driver was chill too. We kept up with each other without racing.

Dylan,

Ah, that rascal Robert Moses and his low-slung bridges designed for low-slung cars.

All kidding aside, the parkway system sure does offer quite a few beautiful & fun drives.
