Today’s is brought to you by

Tidal is Ms. Apple’s first studio record, for which she signed a deal at age 17.

I love to tell people that the first lyrics of her first song of her first record are about telling a man to go to hell.

I tell you how I feel, but you don't care
I say tell me the truth, but you don't dare
You say love is a hell you cannot bear
And I say "Give me mine back and then go there
For all I care”

A pretty tree came down in our yard. Bummer since it just bloomed, though I am lucky the wind blew it away from my car.

Ha — it is/was a dogwood (I think)

You could say I dodged the dog this time ‘round. All “bark,” no bite. ;)

A little annoying that the paddle shifters on my $600 sim wheel feel better than the ones in my $35,000 car!

Melanie went to boarding school growing up and they are having their 35th HS reunion next month.
It costs $375 to attend.
I would not go to mine if they paid me $3750.

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

@Basmitharts
I went to my five-year reunion and I came to the (obvious in hindsight) conclusion that it was an awkward waste of an evening. I’m already in touch with the people I actually want to associate with. 10-year should be this year, but from what I’ve heard it’s unlikely to happen.

To paraphrase my dad, “your friends are still your friends and the assholes are still assholes.”

You could hear the blower on this thing from 4 blocks away.

@Basmitharts Drove next to one of these chuds yesterday — the plate read “SHH2LOUD.” Sounded like complete shit. Thankfully it was raining and I had the top up.

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

@Basmitharts
Now that's something I can get behind. Maybe I'm just scarred from all the SRTs and 5.0s that rev it out when I have the top down.

Side note: I almost never run into a Challenger or Charger driving like an animal. SRT Durangos and Grand Cherokees on the other hand…

Dylan,

@John @Basmitharts
Never understood how someone wouldn’t get sick of that. Their passengers must hate it.

I’ve been getting kinda friendly with a couple guys who live down the street. Seems like they’re about my age, give or take.

Anyway…

They own a yellow MGB.
It runs. It’s registered & insured.

As soon as we can get a nice day with some free time, we’re gonna swap roadsters.

There’s something humiliating about the wind blowing your umbrella inside out. It’s hilarious to watch, but damn, that will humble anyone.

And yes this just happened to me.

Jayden, our friend Justin, and I are going to drive a few hours north to catch the full solar eclipse next Monday. Looking like good weather — fingers crossed.

We’ve got our (certified) glasses and Jayden’s picking up some solar filters for our cameras today. She works down the block from B&H and luckily they still have some filters in stock.

Anyone else have plans to see the partially or totally?

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

@Basmitharts Damn, hopefully y’all get a stroke of good luck before then. My forecast has been jumping between cloudy and sunny, so fingers crossed all around.

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

@yetanotherjesse
Sounds like fun! My better half got me a solar filter for my camera and I can’t wait to give it a try. Supposedly I should be able to see sunspots.

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

@yetanotherjesse
Ha — similar feelings over here. I felt some regret last time around for not going out of my way to get glasses or see the eclipse from ✨the path of totality.✨ Going full-effort this time.

I have a telephoto lens that will zoom to 300mm and that should get pretty great shots even before cropping in.

I'm psyched to see what kind of photos everyone's able to get (even though we're all kinda looking at the same thing).

Driving engagement - what is it?

Is it having a car that keeps you occupied with noise, gear changes and having to be active to get it along a road?

Is it one that leaves you to get along the road and pay attention to all of your surroundings rather than fussing unduly with the car?

Are you engaged with the operation of the machinery or engaged with the higher level task of driving itself?

Does the higher level driving task include feeling what the car is doing at any time?

Discuss 🙂

@serichards
I “hyper-focus” on things that I’m drawn to (thank you, ADHD) and driving is the best example. Always loved driving and my enjoyment only increased as my dailies got more “engaging.”

One of Mazda’s philosophies is ”jinba ittai,” or, “the oneness of horse and rider.” Corny, I know. But I’d be straight-up lying if I said I don’t relate to that when I’m in the zone.

It’s as though my Miata and I naturally adapt to fit each other — like it’s an extension of myself.

@vulgalour @serichards
This is it, folks.

Everyone has their preferred level of effort they want to exert while driving.

Ideally you never feel like you need to wrangle your car. At the same time, numbness can be a drag if the driver is looking for some feedback.

I was kind of skeptical of NYS legal dispensaries when the grey market stuff is so cheap. I’ve come around to liking it and especially live resin and live rosin (two different things). It’s an extract where rather than letting the plant cure (dry) they freeze the fresh picked buds in liquid nitrogen and then press them with a hydraulic press. The result is much more botanical and flavorful with more terpenes. Live resin has solvents and live rosin is straight up with no solvents.

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

@Mark Endorse. Real live resin/rosin/sauce makes for a much more pleasant high compared to distillate. It feels closer to the effects of real flower.

There’s a place by me that started selling live resin and the pricing isn’t too bad, but it’s expensive. $48-$62 for 0.5G depending on the brand. Ends up being about twice the cost of distillate.

Makes me miss visiting dispensaries in Maine. Best products and pricing I’ve ever come across.

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

@Mark
I totally believe that. Please keep me posted if you pick up a rig!

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

@Mark Sounds like a really cool rig. Looking forward to the certified MarkScore™️.

On a related note: I always forget I have this mason jar bong, so thanks for the reminder. I have an adapter to connect my Pax and it makes the vapor wicked smooth.

I read Lawfaremedia.org most days and I love their podcast offerings. Their content tends to focus on topics directly related to national security, though a good chunk of it rightfully has to do with tech & adjacent policy.

From what I can tell, pretty much everyone on Lawfare’s staff is a VerySeriousPerson™️ and I rarely (if ever) see anything close to clickbait.

Here’s a link to their Cybersecurity & Tech page:

Dylan,

@John
Lawfare was producing special episodes of its podcast for some time under the “Arbiters of Truth” title. The main focus was content moderation so there was plenty to talk about, haha.
