Echolot,

Discord is not a bad bet, but I think they still have like 2-4years in them.

Echolot,

Absolutely, I tried switching to it using bridges for all my messaging accounts and the performance was abhorrent, mind you just me, a single user on a self hosted instance.

Echolot,

I just created a pull request yesterday for lemmy-ui and to comfortably work on the frontend you would also have to setup the database and the backend („lemmy“) on your development machine.

Mind you they provide docker containers for the backend so it’s not so hard to get it all running so you can start playing with the UI.

Echolot,

Yes that docker-compose will start all the things needed.

Yeah I would create a copy of an existing or the default theme, of course you can also use the Bootstrap Theme builder linked there but I have never used it myself before so I don’t know how well that’s gonna work.

furysama, to asklemmy

@asklemmy
Hey can I post to Lemmy from mastodon

Echolot,

Yes you can but you have to change the post a bit so it displays well on lemmy. The first line is taken as the title so currently your post is just named „@asklemmy“.

Echolot,

Probably, I don’t know much about Mastodon so I can’t say what will work on that side. But as long as you make sure that it isn’t the first line by itself or not in the first altogether it will probably be fine from the lemmy perspective.

Echolot,

They are planning to switch from WS to HTTP soon (backend is already switch over I think). Either way I don’t think there’s a documentation of the API itself yet, but you can just reverse engineer the calls from the calls from JS library or look at the backend code directly.

Echolot,

I think it has something to do with it loading new content per websockets and displaying it even though it shouldn’t per the current view settings.

For example I was on All - Top for the day and fresh posts started adding themselves on the top (which obviously shouldn’t be in Top with only 1 upvote).

Echolot,

I’m not sure that capitalism per se is the problem here and more so that the entire way modern, especially tech companies, are funded is just stupid.

Present a „new“ concept that nobody has done before. Rake in cash by showing investors your user numbers. Try to actually start making money by squeezing your users. Fail. Maybe because your concept wasn’t working economically from the beginning and that’s why nobody else has done it before.

For everyone new to Lemmy, how are you finding the experience?

I wanted to get a pulse check on how new members are finding the general experience/website. Is it more confusing than Reddit or are you finding the instance system a better way of doing things as it can give you more freedom of where you choose to create an account?...

Echolot,

Let’s not kid ourselves UI/UX needs a lot of work not just a little, but it’s making progress and all done by volunteers and that’s impressive on it’s own.

Echolot,

I partly agree, duplicate communities is something that needs to be addressed somehow.

Echolot,

I wanted to add that feature today and discovered that it was already present in the latest version of the code on the 0.17 branch. So it will be probably be available soon.

Echolot,

They would probably have to drop their plans of going public for me to reconsider. Of course I know this is never ever gonna happen in this reality…

Echolot,

After going public your whole modus operandi switches from "having a well running company that generates a steady income" to "generating more revenue every single year or loosing everything because your share holders dump you"

Echolot,

Not bad, but I like the current one a bit more tbh

Echolot,

If anyone is looking for a solid alternative to D4 right now, I can recommend Lost Epoch. Having a lot of fun playing it currently.

Echolot,

Depends on how you look at it, but I would classify the smoothness of the gesture controls and camera feed to be quite a major breakthrough in usability as well.

Echolot,

This needs to be addressed by the devs in my opinion... I read that the way the Hot score is calculated needs to be changed either way since it's currently horrible for the performance.

Echolot,

Another problem is that you never actually receive a confirmation if your application was received and/or rejected, you are just sorta stuck in limbo after applying.
