FriendBesto,

You know, people can actually stop using most of these apps if they really wanted to. At will.

FriendBesto,

You left out the part where alcohol, weed and others are the soma.

FriendBesto,

The main reason is because the vast majority of people do not care or lack foresight of where that trend has been taking us for over 17 years. Surely you have friends or family who do not care. I do.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

FriendBesto,

Full on Transit app that works well. Most that do are closed sourced and the ones that are open do not work well. A traffic app would be good but that would be very resource intensive. So not holding my breath.

Of course and what is it that they want you to do? Just cut your food intake, eat lab meat, lab milk, bugs, and live in a shoebox. When food production in the USA is 9% of all carbon emissions. And out of those 9%, less than 3.8% is meat. While the cruise ship industry is 3.3% of total, worldwide.

Meanwhile, our CEO’s, their boards, and their extended families, and largest stockholders go on, out on yatchs, zipping around in private jets, go to massive, endless, exorbitant decadent private events and eat whatever they want, whenever they want, because… suck it, pleb.

FriendBesto,

Doesn’t he also allow Far-Right Activists, too?

FriendBesto,

Perhaps. But the fact that is getting and catching attention is a step in the right direction. Most Americans could not find Palestine on a map months ago. They might still not but at least they have been made aware of it.

This is objectively a good thing.

FriendBesto,

Too late, Friend. She backtracked already via a spokesperson soon thereafter.

FriendBesto,

Also, uBO today is a must for any power user, or just any user, for that matter. I have uBO on a number of machines and on average on my settings at leasr a cool 1/4 of all content and connections get blocked. That is a huge % given that I do not use any social media on my PCs. Not even YT, directly.

FriendBesto,

It is now one of the safest countries in the world, which is quite the feat given that at one point, even if briefly, years ago, was the worst in the world. Worse than say Iraq during their civil war caused by the USA after their invasion and their ISIS period. Also safer than the USA.

Also the weather, the world-class surfing, vistas, the food and the party lifestyle. Sister recently moved there.

Mostly in Illinois, and on Amazon, some people who literally bought ISO 12312-2020 instead of ISO12312-2 glasses. There is a story on it.

I knew nothing about the proper ISO for eclipse glasses beforehand but if I was going to risk my eyesight and the eyesight of those who I love like that, you bet I was going to learn about it via due diligence.

Solar eclipse glasses sold on Amazon, in stores recalled: Illinois health officials say

Most people however seemed to have screwed with their eyesight by just looking at the sun. Seems political inclination was really not a factor. Stupidity or lack of education were.

Size of card aside, the notion of getting local provider sims or pay-as-you-go SIMs while traveling has been a thing in Europe for at least 20 years.

FriendBesto,

Had related issues and not only with Breezy. Had to switch back to the F-Droid app. Too bad.

I use my own API keys with it and it is great. Highly recommend. All that is missing is Radar. I use a different app for that.

FriendBesto, (edited )

Maybe he learned from what happened to uBO before the “Origin” label was needed.

FriendBesto,

It is not stupid, it is removed. Tree roots, with time, will dig through/break concrete. Unless the trees are heavily hindered from the get go. Either way it will lead to leaks unless heavily controlled since even small roots with enough time can damage the building structure if allowed. This is a well known issue and not one you want 20 stories up at this scale.

The soil will lose nutrients, so unless everyone there how to compost constantly, then fertilisers will be needed to keep them alive, do you want that in your balcony?

The whole notion of doing this is outright irresponsible from an architecture and lifestyle perspective outside saying, "Look it has green on it, and hoping people are stupid enough to fall for it.

FriendBesto,

Do not know why you are being down voted, you are correct.

I am thankful Mozilla exists because it provides some choice but if you have to changed the user.js --a non-trivial action for regular end users-- or use a fork like Librewolf, or Mullad Browser or even Tor to maximise Privacy that should mostly come available as an easy opt-in setting out of the box, it educates me that Mozilla is not the angel fanboys would like it to be.

Also, their telemetry collection is not trivial either, even more so in their Nightly builds, which in fairness is sort of expected. Also, do not forget that FF has pushed XPIs to end users without their consent in the past.

Manslaughter charges stayed against RCMP officers accused in death of Indigenous man (www.cbc.ca)

Prosecutors have stayed manslaughter charges against two B.C. RCMP officers in the 2017 death of an Indigenous man after a pathologist determined Dale Culver died of a heart attack, not blunt force trauma as was initially believed....

FriendBesto,

Why where the cops detained him:

According to a statement issued Friday by the B.C. Prosecution Service, Culver was arrested in downtown Prince George after police responded to a call about a suspicious man on foot looking into cars.

Culver was in the area, riding a BMX bike without a helmet. A chase and fight ensued after he refused to stop for a police officer, resulting in a call for assistance from all other officers in the area.

“Const. Ste-Marie was the first to arrive. He … punched Mr. Culver at least once in the head. The next officer arrived, Const. Monette, who kicked or kneed him in the head or upper body,” according to the statement.

“When paramedics arrived, Mr. Culver was initially responsive. He stood up outside the vehicle, but then collapsed and died 29 minutes after the conclusion of his interaction with the police, which was approximately three minutes.”

What happened? "Saulnier said Pollanen’s report concluded Culver died of cardiac arrest brought on by sustained use of methamphetamines and the struggle with police “contributed to or exacerbated his conditions.”

FriendBesto,

Agreed, this is why I am slowly moving away from Signal. The moment they announced putting in a wallet along their own crypto, was the sign for me to leave.

FriendBesto,

Otherwise known as: Berridge Law of Headlines.

en.wikipedia.org/…/Betteridge's_law_of_headlines

And yeah, wished it was the case. But no.

US says Israel has not violated international law during Gaza war (www.aljazeera.com)

After Israel killed seven aid workers in Gaza, the US says it has not found any incidents of Israel violating international humanitarian law in the past six months. An Al Jazeera probe concluded the World Central Kitchen vehicles were deliberately hit.

FriendBesto,

That is what we call a lie by stating a correct statement.

Why? It is only a correct statement because Israel has and had already violated International Law before the recent Gaza war.

A truthful statement would be, “Israel continues to break international law in the current Gaza War as it has done for years and per over 30 UN Resolutions.”

The power of words, friends.

FriendBesto,

Nice to hear. I am all in with keeping Zuck out of the Fediverse. Any initiative in that direction is a positive step, in my view.

FriendBesto,

You are correct. It is not implemented on Android. I have two versions on my phone. Mull, and CookieWeb Preview. But also Tor for when I want to really go incognito.

FriendBesto,

With the Adaptive Tab add-on, the theme changes to match the colour of the site I am on. Like in Vivaldi. That’s my favourite.
